General Discussion Area / Back from the break ....
« on: 24 March 2008, 20:39:12 »
Back from the bank holiday break - and boy was it wet !!! Guess everyone had the same .. all 4 seasons in 2 hours !! Got towed onto the site and off again !! and left the car at the gates for the duration  :)

First long run out with the new beast and the 'van .. couple of little problems ..

Looks like the breathers/cam covers need doing as a small but annoying leak has started from the drivers side... I'll assume that there is not a huge amount of difference in doing the 3.2 instead of the 2.5 ??? might actually be easier by the looks of things ....

Auxilliary belt tensioner started to make a VERY horrible noise on the way there, however thanks to "Picador Vauxhall" in Southampton - who could not have been more helpful, and even gave me discount using ABS card  !! - A new pulley was obtained for Saturday morning - quick trip to Halfords to buy a small socket set and the job was done by lunchtime - much quieter now  :)

Seem to have developed a  light rattle from "up top", wondering if a lifter is playing up ???

Got home to find that the ELM 327 thingy that I bought off fleabay eventually arrived on Saturday - software is not brilliant but it has already confirmed that the thermostat is FUBAR ... system is actually running at about 78 degrees although she runs great - there I was hoping it was an indication problem ....

Anyone any opinions on better software for these things ??

So a small amount of work building up ... stand by for a lot more questions :)

What's going on ???

I go away for 3 days (work) and when I return there are pages and pages of posts, .....  several well known members appear to have changed their names, ...... one member has apparently lost his posts (again).... several avatars have been replaced, ....  and numerous signatures have changed .....

There are rumours of staff members embarking on new hobbies, James appears to be buying another V6, Marie wants to fill up with gas, her husband has taken up DIY surgery, there's a new competition .. with prizes ...

The virus "quote this" seems to be rampant, friendships appear to be disintegrating, petrol prices are still rising, VED hasn't gone down ..

and that's only "General Chat"   ... I haven't got around to the other bits yet !!!!

What have you guys been on this weekend ???? !!!

General Discussion Area / Problems with the new beast :(
« on: 09 February 2008, 00:56:55 »
Having spent a good 4 hours wiring in the Vx 13pin towing kit .. which was nothing like the existing wiring in 80% of it ... I was having a good look around underneath while it was up in the air, and have serious concerns ......

The car was sold to me as having self-leveling suspension - as the old one had, this is a requirement for me due to the amount of towing I do - but on closer inspection it appears to have had replacement springs/ shockers fitted (irmscher label on one) that are not self-leveling, and may even be a lowering kit .. more investigation required as we ran out of time and light.

Tow ball height appears to be about 1 1/2 inches too low, and I'm worried about it dropping further when hitched up.

I'll be doing some accurate measuring tomorow and probably a phone call to the seller... although I'm not sure where I stand legally ... :(

General Discussion Area / LPG question
« on: 29 January 2008, 23:19:25 »
I visited "Diesellec" in Swindon today for a quote to do the new motor, they gave me this inormation :

Largest tank to go across the back  - 85 litres giving 70 litres of Gas
50 hours work - would take 7-10 working days (they would want the car for 2 weeks)
Cost - £1800

Now Elite Pete had a quote for £1100 job done in a day ( Cardiff area ?)

and the guys who did it themselves put in - I think - 100 litre tank giving 80 litres gas and reckoned it was 2 hard days work and the parts cost about £800 in total..... if memory serves me

Now this seems to me to be a major difference in many areas .. or have I got it all wrong ??? at the moment this information does not seem to tie up ... especially the work loads .. just how do you do that amount of work in one day ... properly ?

I am still very keen to gas the new beast.

General Discussion Area / Firewalls
« on: 18 January 2008, 23:25:14 »
I have for a long time used/advised/given folks the free version of Sygate Firewall that is very effective and very simple to use. Unfortunately Sygate were taken over by Norton (who I won't touch with the proverbial) and it has never been updated.

Now it still works really well on XP and below .. but does not work on Vista.

Can anyone recommend a free, simple (and by that I mean it asks allow/block and remember answer options like Sygate did on every incoming and outgoing program and a simple click response is enough) and effective firewall that I can suggest to those idiots folks buying systems with Vista pre-installed, as we all know how useless windows firewall really is!!

Thanks

General Discussion Area / Decisions, decisions ...
« on: 04 January 2008, 22:19:18 »
I have a dilemma .. opinions requested.

I love the meega as it is easily the best car I have had.. both solo and as a tow car. I paid £8500 for it 51/2 years ago, and its probably worth around £1800 now. Due to recent mishaps I will probably have to spend/discount £300 if I sold it so actually only worth £1500 - and I might not get that on trade in.

We tow on the continent every year and it is difficult to get breakdown cover on a car more than 12 years old, as this one is now 8, it realistically will need replacing in 4 years.

I did all the calculations on LPG conversion, and mileage wise would recover the cost in 12-14 months, so that is still viable.

What I am thinking.... would it be better to trade this in for a 02/03 for around £5000-£6000 now, and have that LPG converted, so having a car that will do the job for 7-8 years ??
