Omega General Help / Re: Brake Pad Change
« on: 04 August 2006, 19:15:51 »
This may not be exactly the answer you were waiting for, but even though the pads are quite thick, while the pads are out, for the cost of a new set (£12.21+VAT on TC) I would renew them as a matter of course. If you were just taking the wheels off for inspection, I'd say leave 'em, but as they are already out...

Also, it is difficult to judge form the picture, but if your disks have a 'lip' then you should measure that they are not under the minimum thickness (25mm) and if so consider replacing them as well (£66.42+VAT with the pads on TC).

And last but not least - great pics, with your permission I may use them for the benefit on newbies in the future...

They were not on TC at the time but the dealer let me have them for trade price which was then £70 each  :( : ....

I piad around £100 for mine from the dealers last year (or was it the year before?  :-/)  ;)

£100 for one or for two?

Ask the boss to put her foot on the brake to see if it disappears, if it does then I would say wheel bearing ;)

Yup, mine went at only 45k, confirmed by Tony from WIM using above method.

It comes with the whole hub, you can't change just the bearing  :(

I could not find pattern ones on on eBay, so I forked-out for original Vx (which turned-out to be Japanese anyway). They were not on TC at the time but the dealer let me have them for trade price which was then £70 each  :( :(

Not a huge job but you do need a torque wrench capable of 320NM...

As above - it's no biggy, nothing to worry about, just make sure that the oil is up to the FULL mark (and change it if not done recently - preferably to GM oil as Mark said) and drive on....

You can try identifying the fault by removing overnight various fuses that control suspect electric equipment.

But to properly do this you will need to connect an Amp-meter and see what the drainage is.

Brake fluid, as tunnie says... Omega brakes are generally very good.

Also - he said seating, not sealing.... I can't answer that as mine was done by Vx.

as above, really, never heard of sealing issues. Thats just cowboys doing it wrong.

Thought it was 1998 for stainless oil coolers, but have seen failures later than that, prob caused by poor coolant maintiance

The (supposedly stainless steel new type) oil cooler failed on my 2.6 Y-Reg 2001 when it was still under warranty! i.e. less than 3 years old, and only 20k+ on the clock.

Vx replaced it FOC but this has to be down to poor design/manufacture, you can't blame the coolant for an oil cooler failure on a nearly new car.

Obviously poor coolant maintenance makes things worse, but I think that there is a basic flaw in the way Vx implemented the oil cooler, they just fail far too often on both old and new cars.

Omega General Help / Re: Spark Plugs
« on: 28 December 2009, 15:37:43 »
The original Vx-branded ones are actually made by Bosch. Furthermore when I changed the plugs at 40k I noticed that the original factory fitted plugs were Bosch-branded - they did not even bother branding then Vx...

Interestingly, at the time when I changed the plugs the Bosch ones were more expensive than their Vx-sourced sibling - which was strange.

Either way, the Bosch made Vx-branded are inexpensive from the dealer - I think they were a only couple of quid each under TC - so I don't think it is worth bothering with other brands, though to be fair they are other good makes out there e.g. Denso, NGK, etc.

My Omegas always had Michelins which were OK, apart from one time that I had the Contis. IMO the Contis were better-suited to the Omega though.

just another quick question what about that semi-synth magnatec? i think that i read from the opie oils guy that it has charged polymers that causes it to cling to engine parts better? :-?

Its just marketing bull, Castrol seems to create a lot of mayo compared to other oils for V6.

For the Vx lumps, stick with GM Semi Synth.

I agree...

I used Mobil-1 0W-40 Full-Synth for a while, but then switched-back to GM 10W-40 Semi Synth which seems to be generating the least amount of mayo.

You will also need the plumbers tools for bending copper pipes.

ECU, me thinks....

Tech2 to prevent immobiliser issues?

Maybe also MID, but this is probably less important.
