Should have let her get on with it and then see if all fall flat on it's face, not many people I know here like her, don't know where she keeps getting this argument about Scots wanting a referendum, not anyone I know!

I found running a 10mm drill bit through the lifting eye made it much easier as you then have a bit of wiggle room lining up 3 things and a bolt that is going in at less than ideal angle and a working space designed for triple jointed long fingered contortionists .

You will never ever be using the lifting eye on these ages of car now and its realy only acting as a spacer .

Regarding the 2 stat housing bolts a couple of stainless washers will help if you dont get a new housing with the thicker shoulders t match what should be fitted as OE.

Good point, I se from the guide that it holds the oil tube bolt as well as the lifting spacer, so worth just removing the lifting eye and keeping it somewhere?

You have to remove the bolt to move the pipe otherwise you will never be able to remove the thermostat. Basically the bolt secures the pipe to the thermostat housing.

AC Delco Thermostats and Pipes are readily available from the US.
I had the bolt that secures the transfer pipe out ok, it was the putting it back that was a mission.

Hi James

I'm doing the TB, rocker covers, breathers, water pump, plugs etc. at the moment so wanted to change stat as a matter of course while I'm in there (Elite 3.2). I do have a spare brand new link pipe (OE), and was wondering about taking this one off as I done same job on my 2.6 and while the pipe was perfectly fine, I had a lot of issues getting the Bar steward bolt to start back in it's thread.

Now that you've mentioned the shorter flange on the replacement stats that's got me thinking (Worried  ;D) that it may be like this on my 2.6, although there's no signs of leaks or overheating on that so. Appreciate pointing that out, I'll certainly check this with a very careful eye when I'm in there.

Certainly something to think about removing all the backplate but not something I'd planned on doing. In all honesty I think the pipe should be ok, low miler and looks to have been kept filled with proper coolant, although should the worse case be realised then I do have a spare pipe.

As I said the only thing that gave me a bit of concern was putting the bar steward bolt back in due the issues I had last time. When I was running it in it seemed to go quite tight, quite quickly, and it never seemed to tighten firmly, so I was panicking it was not in place right and threads hadn't caught right.

I'd taken the bolt back out several times and restarted it but it never seemed to feel right, I don't know if maybe something was pressing against the side of it or thread had got nipped.

Thanks

G

Hi

Stat for v6 later model

Just wondering if anyone can recommend a good one, as there are lots of different makes. What one have you used before that seems to have lasted well etc. Couple of the one's I'm looking at are Mahle (Really expensive), gates/Febi mid-range price, then the usual other standard cheaper ones like Dayco/Quinton Halzell etc.

just going by price would probably go mid-range like Febi, but interested to hear everyones thoughts on makes or are they all much the same quality?

Cheers

Omega General Help / White Silicone grease
« on: 26 October 2022, 21:17:04 »
Been having a look through the workshop manual for various jobs like water pump and it says on installation to lube the mating surfaces and rubber seal with silicone grease (white). Is this not just vaseline or is it some other special gloop I need to use? I do like my lube  :D

Car Parts, bits For Sale & Wanted / Re: WANTED: V6 oil cooler

Gen part search has one, but it's 256 bucks and it may not be in stock. Search for 93176626

They don't generally stock anything.

I'd bet on it not being in stock, most of the stuff I now find isn't either, they don't update their stock system. Used to be quite a lot of parts there, probably me that bought half of it! Really just a side division of autovaux.

and there's also the Japanese JIS cross head screwdrivers  ;)
And a few others...   ...but on a German alternator, any crosshead is likely to be the more common Pozi or slightly less common Philips :)

Think i may have been using a normal phillips on a pozi, as it wouldn't grip, but as i said was hellish tight, plus the other 2 screws loosned off (just) with same driver used.

Don't recall any issues, to the point I can't even remember what type of screws they are.

I'm sure I'm teaching you to suck eggs, but you know that Philips and Pozidrive are incompatible with each other...

Lol I've never even noticed that in all my time working in cars. Guess I'm more attuned to nuts and bolts, in saying that I think it's just a standard Phillips but wil double check, the other 2 loosened ok but as said we're really tight.

What is the recommended equivalent gloop to use for cam cover gaskets as it seems the 90485251 isn't available anywhere I've looked. Noticed in the guide it's grey sealant being used.

Sorry, but if you actually bothered looking, you would find that it is, in fact, readily available.

I did look but didn't see the original GM one, so wasn't sure if all those listed are compatible or one better than the other etc. I do have a lot of knowledge sourcing parts for my old fleet quite extensively over the years, I wasn't sure what the compatible gloop was, especially when I seen grey goop being used in the guide, yet most if not all say use black goop and nothing else.

You on about the one that allows you out of park (check brake switch) or the one that prevents starting when in Park or Neutral?

If latter, is it better in one position (say park) than other?  How are the LEDs by gearstick when it plays up?

I think it's prevents you starting in anything other than P & N but is sort of doing it in N mainly, probably ok in park, although I usually turn ignition on, unlock the park lock, then pull into N ready to slot into D before I fire it up, just a habit I've got into with autos. Lights are ok, just got to move lever back and forth a few baw hairs while in N and you hear the starter kick on and off then it catches and goes.
Try to get in habit of starting it properly (in park), and see if that improves things.  Does sound like your range switch though.

I'll try in park next time see how it goes. When you say range switch, is that something to do with the selector switch thing in the gearbox?

134
It was the brake lights switch that left me stuck in P when at the light unable to move  ::)

Even more reason for me to never put it in P at lights !

sounds like either the contacts are just a little dirty/ bad or the adjustment is just a tad off.
idealy and worthwhile just doing the inevitable removal and full clean up that they usually need eventually anyway.

thinking that myself, car's off the road now for winter, so don't need it. Will get round to checking it as some point over next few weeks/months.
