Decided to keep the Tata... for now
« on: 19 September 2019, 12:20:49 »

I almost sold the Tata last week but changed my mind at the last moment.

Yesterday, my new toy arrived and the difference it has made to the performance is more than I was expecting. Price of the unit is £599 plus VAT, so £718.80. I negotiated a price of £450 including P&P. :y

Zero to sixty in 4 seconds is no better  with a lack of traction being the main problem. However, once rolling the car is far quicker than before even though it wasn't exactly tardy to begin with.

This application works extremely well with planet-killing derv cars. :)

If you fitted it yourself, I take it it's simple. They reckon they can squeeze an extra 40bhp out of my astra, taking it to over 200. Only £249+VAT.  ::)

It would need to be. ;D

Yes......pretty simple to fit. They send a new map by email. In the old days it would have been cams, pistons and carbs. Now it is some geeky kid who sits in front of a computer all day.

So you bought the V switch? Just been speaking to a nice chap called Ian who explained it all to me. I was a bit worried about 205bhp through my auto box, but he says it's ok. I'll give it some thought, 205bhp may be nothing to you, but it will certainly pep up my dog walks :)

It's not just the extra power you'll notice but the extra torque.

Ask for a discount they will almost certainly give you one. :y

V switch is £299+VAT, they will let me off with the VAT (£60). I'll have a ponder.

Dr Opti,

I have some magic beans here. £500, but you can have them for £250 cash.  :y :y

Seriously though, how did you apply the map if it was emailed? Not sure a 5.0 Supercharged V8, with 0-60 if 4s needs more power.  ;D

 V switch drive ?

Quite an interesting read. I like the concept of valet mode!

So do you buy some hardware which can move from vehicle to vehicle and then the software for your specific vehicle?

It's quite simple really. Using the V-switch device supplied by Viezu, you plug this into the car and download the original map to the device. This file is then transferred to your computer which is then sent by email to Viezu. They then send you an uprated map, which you then transfer to the V-switch device and you then plug into the car and upload. Takes about 20 minutes each time.  :y

Surprised a 3rd party tool is allowed write access to such a critical component as engine map, you would have thought Jag would have locked that down for you average DIY'er  :-\

Basically, yes.

Once you have the V Switch device you can access maps for the same car, or different cars, for about £100 each. :y

Remappers get around this easily enough. :)

Apparently Viezu remapped 24000 BT vans  for extra economy, and saved BT a fortune.

True, but in a garage full of tech, not home DIY tool.

I'm a bit sceptical of these maps to be honest.

I only plug it in and push a few buttons. It is not something I personally knocked up in a shed. ;)

They say I can get an extra 45bhp for my Mondeo or alternatively an extra 20 bhp and 10% fuel saving. I think I have that right?  ???  :-\

Yes 20 bhp hardly seems worth the effort.  :-\

Although with 10% fuel savings I'd pay for it in about 43 fill ups at todays fuel prices!*  :y

* Other fuel prices are available.  ;D

Omega is N/A.....any returns would be small so probably not worth the expense.

I've been using the Mondeo as my daily for the last couple of weeks and even though it goes quite well with its Transit engine, an extra 45 bhp is tempting.  :-\  ::)

Some available gains are impressive, I know the Saab turbo petrols respond well, as does the ubiquitous VAG 2.0 turbo petrol that's in pretty much everything these days.

I've always wondered about the merits of a plug in box Vs a 'proper' remap though.  ??? Clearly the former is more easily removed, but I wonder if it's as good for the engine.  :-\

2.2TDCi producing 172 bhp, so allegedly it could be boosted to 217 bhp.  :)

I assume an extra 45 bhp would give a noticable difference in performance?  ???  :-\

I also assume that I can send the bills for the extra fuel that I'll consume to Lord Opti, as it will be his fault!  :)

More power and better fuel economy....

One has to ask why the manufacturers ever anxious for better figures don't  use these maps as standard.? Could it be that components cannot  take the extra stress.. that being the case you wouldn't want to buy a s/h car that had been stressed up and thrashed and then reverted to factory spec.....

You might have heard that I was once the proud owner of a Morris Marina 1800TC Coupe.  :)

It had a thick black stripe right down the centre of the BL Mustard coloured bonnet and very successful it was too!  :y

Maybe Lord Opti could have saved his £450 and got his paintbrush out instead?  :D  ;D

How can they (or any other), it would also block engine sw updates.

Anyway, the system can detect non signed engine maps and will record it.

Quiet simple, its wont meet emissions with the new map (and the manufacturer has to met far more than just the MOT test emissions)

There are also instances where manufacturers will fit the same engine in different models (or different trim levels of the same model) with different power outputs. For example, Saab would sell you three versions of a 2.0t 4-pot with anything from 150 to 180 to 210 bhp. All identical and all capable of being mapped to about 230bhp.

You will also see manufacturers mapping cars lower so they don't 'embarrass' their own cars further up the model range. The instance of this that readily springs to mind is the 987 Cayman S vs the 997 911.

That's okay on a diesel, as long as the remap doesn't make it smoke.  ;D

I've been using the Mondeo as my daily for the last couple of weeks and even though it goes quite well with its Transit engine, an extra 45 bhp is tempting.  :-\  ::)

What engine Sir Tig? My 2.0L ecotec doesn't need any more. ::)

Of course. I give you my word as a gentleman that I will pay. :)

I've decided against. Went out with doggie yesterday afternoon and found that, for the conditions available to me, my astra has sufficient power. It gets along the road quite well and, although an extra 40bhp sounds appealing, where would I use it?  :-\

Same with our Tourer, it has more than enough power given cameras/traffic etc.

Prior to the Viezu V-switch I purchased a tuning box from TDI Tuning which fitted under the bonnet. It cost around £350 and was utter crap, with no gains whatsoever. I sent it back for a refund. It was supposed to give an extra 60 BHP and 60 FT LB of torque. :-[........in reality it gave SFA.

As far as I am aware the V-Switch provides a new map (just like a proper remap) where a 'piggy back tuning box' simply disrupts the incoming signal (I think).

Car will now hit a genuine 100 MPH in less than 9 seconds (on a private road, obviously) according to my Racelogic GPS data logger. :)

Could you be tempted by an 'economy tune' remap.....Mr Tunnie? ::)

It may be more your bag. ;)

Presumably your last act as you climb out of the wreckage is to revert the ECU to factory settings while you wait for the ambulance.

Would the insurance company really interrogate the ECU if the car looked standard, you had no traffic offences and you were a Lord?

You obviously have no idea of the lengths insurance companies will go to to save paying out the £76.50 for a totalled omega.

reverting the map to OEM won't clear freeze frame data ,which is NOT the fuel map ,with suitable hardware and software you could clear freezeframe data  , if your blood loss allows the time  ;D
"they do anything not to pay out "
being a Lord, he probably won't even bother making an insurance claim for such a pittance £30k  :-\

Old Diesells where they just have a smog test yes, newer diesels tested on emissions so no, won't pass.

Viezu offer a 30 day 'no quibble' warranty. Try it for a couple of weeks and see what you think. :y
