Battery gets drained overnight ?
« on: 27 December 2017, 18:26:06 »

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum and glad that this community exists.

This is probably a very long shot, but I will try to explain.

I bought a 2.2dti 2001 omega.

It was working fine, but then one day it just wouldn't start,... dead battery !

So since this was a used car and the battery was 4 years old already, i got another one (varta 70ah)

It also worked fine for like 2 or 3 days but then it just wouldnt start.

So I took a multimeter and noticed voltage drop on fuse12.

I then took my battery to charge with a home charger (not the smart type, the dumb type that can damage the battery..)
and since then, I have put the battery back and I make sure to remove fuse12 when i step out of the car to make sure i dont drain the battery overnight.

Well, of course I forgot to remove the fuse a couple of times, and now the new battery is almost dead (wont hold the charge for long)

So I know I will have to buy another battery now, and that is OK, but i of course dont want to damage this new battery.

So my question is : Has anyone had a similar issue ?
I know this is a long shot because fuse 12 in this car at least seems to power so many things (instrument cluster, warning light, heat control, colour info display (even though mine isnt working), etc....)

as a sidenote, but that might be very relevant to the discussion here, i noticed when i bought the car, that if all lights are turned off (as in typical daylight situation) and i press the brake pedal, then the driver side front parking light (the dimmest light) turns on (and my bad, i never really cared to have it looked at before)

if anyone has any clues, or any question, please feel free to comment :)
(and sorry for any mistakes, english is not my native tongue)

If you have a pikey hook fitted, can you not use the feed for the van socket...  :-\

Welcome to the forum.  :y

Fuse 12 covers the alarm, & as the siren is known to be a problem I'd suggest removing it & see what happens. On a right hand drive car it lives under the scuttle panel on OUR driver's side.
The side light fault could be, as you say, part of the problem. Check all lamp holders for a good connection.

(When he says pikey hook, he means a tow bar ......  ???)

Hi Andy B

Thanks for the reply.

I will try removing the siren, even though I dont really use it yet (i think i need to lock it twice so that the light of the alarm stays on saying its enabled), i will still give it a try just to be sure.

I also noticed just now after driving it, that when i put the car in rear gear, the rear fog light comes on as well ...  :(

It looks like there might be a couple of electrical issues here and i'm not really an electrician.

I'll change the bulbs, check their seatings and holders for a good connection and see how it goes, but just in case that doesn't fix the problem, has anyone got any experience with trying to find what exactly is drawing current from the battery when the cars turned off ?

i got me a copy of TIS2000 running off a virtual machine and I have the corresponding diagrams where it says that fuse 12 (20A) on this car is linked to :

- diagnostic link (i presume thts the odb2 port)
- hazard warning switch
- Instrument (that one I am not sure what they mean by Instruments....)
- Electronic climate control
- TID or MID or GID or CID (I have the CID, which as I said isnt working (white screen, i think it needs a new lcd panel but i rather focus on something else for the time being))
- Anti Theft Warning system (And as you said I will try removing the siren)
- Radio (I have the ndc2013)
- Carphone (which I dont seem to have, although there seems to be some cable with what appears to be a microphone hanging off the top of the driver's sun visor/vanity mirror)
- gps (the car has it, but i can't even use the screen because the lcd is dead and it's totally outdated anyways i guess)
- navigation system (is that redundant with gps or is it another thing i am not sure.)
- telephone (is this redundant with carphone i am not sure ?)
- telematic (i dont have it and it is not fitted)
- y25dt  (thats not my engine so thats not present)
- central door locking
- phone/voice control (not sure what that is... )

so as you can see, thats really a lot of places to look.

has anyone got any clues on how I can check each items of the list ?
Say for example I want to check if the leak is coming from the electronic climate control, how could I know where exactly to put the multimeter nodes on ?

The alarm is in operation when you lock the car without dead locking. Sirens can .... & do .... catch fire by themselves  :o

thanks for the info, that's good to know that it is in operation even without dead locking.
I will give it a try without it and see of the current draw dissapears.
If not, I will attempt the other venues of this electrical circuit.
