General Discussion Area / Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse.

The container ship wasn't even pretending to be in the marked channel under the bridge :o

It may have been trying to cut the corner to the west of Fort Carroll  but would have had plenty of room to clear the bridge first.

General Discussion Area / Careless driving FFS
« on: 22 March 2024, 09:31:31 »
Read summat tother day that actually boiled my piss >:(

Bicyclists and motorbicyclists are actively encouraged to swerve around anything in the road that might make them fall off regardless of the fact that the reason they haven't spotted said anything is because they're either speeding/tailgating/filtering (whatever the fruck that's supposed to be...  :-X) and drivers are taught to expect all of the above and make allowances for all of it at the same time.

Yet...

If a car drivers even thinks to make such an avoiding manoeuvre they risk being prosecuted for careless driving with a ridiculous fine and potentially lose their licence. Presumably if you crash as a result of ripping a wheel off in a pothole the size of Birmingham whilst trying to avoid splatting a filtering motorbicyclist you get charged with careless driving for the whole thing.

I understand that being unlicensed and uninsured vermin, bicyclists are basically untouchable, but having presumably passed some sort of test aren't motorbicyclists held to the same account as any other driver ??? In which case what's good for the goose and all that.

Surprised noone has mentioned this...

Although given the make up of the local population they're probably happier voting to make an anti Semitic statement than acknowledge the blatant issues within their own community  :-X

General Discussion Area / US Election news...

Are the media still that blinkered?*

The Telegraph reported that Biden has won the Democratic ballot in New Hampshire, yet failed to mention (for comparison purposes and balance) that Trump won his nomination with over twice the number of votes. Similar story in Iowa.

*A rhetorical question given their previous form.

First sensible take on it...

https://youtu.be/I9EvHpf8jZg?si=6Z63Mr_hwp6xTqfd

Looks like a derivative of the door used on the 757 for D3... That was also bottom hinged. Pulling the handle releases the clamps and it falls away from the aircraft deploying the slide as it goes. (All door mounted slides are clamped to the floor at the door frame when armed and this type would be permanently armed,
very different to the equivalent door on an A321).

The obvious differences between this and the 757 D3 are a smaller bustle (shorter slide due to the much lower sill height) allowing for a standard window.

Just tested positive for TCV >:(

Felt a bit stuffy when I woke up yesterday, but just had two nights in French France and put it down to the crappy aircon in the room. Felt right enough to work.

Woke up this morning streaming nose, no sense of smell, a slight cough and a bit of a headache. Figured a test might be in order and sure enough, straight to positive.

Just finished 10 flights in six days and slept in three countries so could have picked it up anywhere  :-\

General Car Chat / AGM battery life expectancy.
« on: 11 July 2023, 22:44:30 »
Just dug the battery out of the boot.

Showing less than 5v. Genuine Merc/Varta AGM battery, apparently made in December '22 :o

I presume 7 months isn't a normal battery life expectancy.

I also presume that there's no point trying to charge it with a regular Helfrods battery charger...

So Alabama Mumsybus replacement is provisionally sourced... The variety of available cars around the budget raised some interesting questions.

Car was chosen from the shortlist of identical cars, some newer some older, all with slightly different options.

Ended up deciding on a combination of condition and MoT history as opposed to price or spec. A better equipped, but higher mileage/owner car with full service history that was 20% cheaper due to one door being unopenable was dismissed instantly because the DVLA think it's something else and the MoT history is horrendous. And slightly more expensive cars don't offer much over the chosen one.

How do you all decide upon the car you buy?

General Discussion Area / Dominic Raab
« on: 21 April 2023, 11:45:43 »
Apparently the retarded excuses for journalists we have to endure have failed to consider the possibility that the PM was waiting until Monday to sack him in order to give Mr Raab the weekend to consider his position/options, after all, the report found most of the allegations to be unfounded.

Sure, he might not be known for his soft, fluffy side, but a robust management style shouldn't be something to be ashamed of. Pandering to all the wet lettuce achieves SFA, certainly nothing positive.
