In our force (and possibly some others) we used to employ civvy police staff to drive fully kitted custom made Mercedes Sprinter vans to collect & transport our 'clients' to the nearest custody facility. They were absolutely brilliant at their jobs, would go out of their way above & beyond their role, to make our jobs easier and keep us on the streets. They were like gold, especially on a Friday & Saturday night when there was a queue in custody, they'd wait with 3,4,5+ prisoners and enable you to go back out into the breach. They'd sit with hospital arrests too until they got discharged and could got to custody. Then due to the reductions in police staff they got rid of them  ::) ::) ::) ::) One of the most valuable resourses we had, now on a Friday you can wait anything up to 2-3 hours to book a 'client' in.

Oh and health & safety dictates that we have to be double crewed to 'escort' a 'client to custody in a police vehicle. It would help if we were EVER double crewed!!! >:( >:( >:(

G4S have won the contract for most forces...wonder how many they will lose this time ????
