Omega General Help / codes 420 & 430.
« on: 12 October 2010, 12:14:22 »
okay, I know there's a fix involving moving the sensors....   but can someone educate me as to the underlying cause, and the prognosis....

is it also fixable in the long term or medium term , by replacing the sensors?  or is it more about new Cats?

roughly how long can one sensibly use the vehicle with the EML on as a result of these codes?  what effect does it have on the engine management , and so on.... ?

(yes we checked the memory and these codes were present when i bought it....  so it's not much of a surprise...   that  the EML is now on...  frankly  i suspect the seller had tech 2 reset it just prior to the purchase , in the hope we would be unaware.....   my ebay feedback deliberately did not include the word Honest!   )

Omega General Help / worrying noise when cold
« on: 07 August 2010, 11:20:50 »
this week, the beloved , but much abused miggy has started making a worrying noise....

when cold, it's "knocking" once per revolution.....   or maybe less.... actually...

my intuition , and gut tell me that it could be

A) exhaust manifold related, at one end?  so one cylinder   is  making  a racket...

B) something far more worrying and expensive, maybe a dry oil feed to the top of the driver side V?   (not low on oil or pressure)

C) even worse, a big end bearing?  (although i think the noise is coming from top  side of the drivers side Vee , so this seems unlikely)

it's very obvious when cold, and gets worse under load (acceleration)

and then it calms done as it warms up....

the exhaust does sound a little throatier than i think it ought to.... even when warm.... and was only fitted at the beginning of the year...

Jaimeeeeeee   you planning on visiting the in-laws this weekend???   wanna put an expeirenced ear to it while it's cold?

buy you a pint over the road?

i have to drive to Exeter on Monday morning....   if i need to hire , beg , borrow, or buy another car, i probably need to know before it dies halfway down the M5

(i've only got back from working away (in a hired van) for a few days at 5 this morning... so be gentle with me.... )

Omega General Help / weird issue.... engine stalls, no fault codes
« on: 17 February 2010, 15:32:03 »
it's done it a few times now....   just sitting idling in traffic....  the engine just dies...   sometimes it might run a little rough first, but not by much....  then suddenly cuts out...  just drops dead...   then won;t start  immediately,  just turns over , but shows no sign of "catching" . but eventually, it does after a few minutes...   the last time it did this i drove straight to the garage....   they stuck a tech reader on it but there were no stored fault codes...

any bright ideas.... ???  it's bloody irritating, and embarrassing....  holding up rush hour traffic is not my idea of fun.

all operating parameters within normal bounds, good fuel, normal temperature, plenty of fresh oil,  recently serviced, new cam belt, new exhaust, new cam cover gaskets, new pipe on EGR system,   it's done it before and after all these things....

i'm wondering about HT leads....  since the cam covers needed replacing , (noticed by realising the plug wells were at least part filled with oil ) maybe they could have been affected ??

they tried 3 different readers on it....  no results from any of them...

any thoughts??

Omega General Help / what to buy?? happy new year....
« on: 31 December 2009, 16:33:15 »
1) hi happy new year... sorry i've not been around....

2) so let's say i'm thinking of replacing my V reg 3.0 mini facelift elite estate....  (it has ALL the bells and whistles...  sat nav , built in phone bose stereo , eleccy everything etc.. )    and the budget, not including anything i might get for it , is £3K

i want a similar spec to mine...   under 100K miles ,
any ideas???   spotted anything nice??

i'd prefer sat nav built in....  i hate the windscreen stick on jobs...

i like v6's....    ;) and it has to be an estate....

can't find many similar spec motors right now....  not that i like any how... i will NOT go for a bloody rover....  and i'd prefer not to buy a Jap motor....

current prospects include 5 series Beemers, the odd merc, any miggy i can find.....

so far i've spotted a miggy elite , apparently without satnav...  i'll look at it next week...  for 2K 88k miles...  FSH  ....

also 7 seaters are possibles...  but not essential.

any ideas and pointers??

Omega General Help / oh buggerit
« on: 09 November 2008, 01:47:11 »
Driving home from a birthday Dinner (mine....    ) this evening, about an hour ago....  the orange engine management light comes on, the power dies, then the oil and brake light (standard ignition on, engine not running pair) join it....

no recent previous signs of trouble, no rough running, no nothing.....

i managed to roll off the A34 , down to the botley road and into a parking space...

no warnings active in the MID ....   not in a position to do a paperclip test right now...having had to call a cab to get the mrs home as well.....

just the birthday present i wanted...  a dead miggy.

Omega General Help / miggy misbehavin
« on: 08 September 2008, 14:48:40 »
as of the weekend, it appears i've got a weird, occasional lumpy misfire thing going on.....

feels like it suddenly runs on 3 cylinders, or suffers fuel starvation....

still working on what triggers it....    the worst occasions appear to be when it's running a bit waRM , about 97.5 degrees or thereabouts...   and indeed , it tends to be running warmer overall now than it has done before...

it doesn;t do it all the time, not even nearly....   but ANY instance is worrying and indicative of something not quite right....

it may also be doing it if one is diving hard left, say round a tight corner or something , perhaps under braking, but it's difficult to know if that was mere coincidence , since i don't often do that....   :y   or at least not as hard as it was this morning .....

initially i thought it was a water related issue having got thoroughly THOROUGHLY drenched at high speed this weekend...  on the way to Gloucester, where it first started doing it....  it cleared up after 10 minutes or so...  which i figured was how long it might take to dry out,   but it's been doing it this morning on my way into london and back, in bone dry weather.

typically it's impossible to get it to do it on demand...

experimentation so far implies that it doesn't do it if i have the heater running flat out.....

i wondered might that imply a knackered HBV and dripping on to the Dis-pack?

BUT it doesn't appear to be loosing much coolant...   it was a bit low ( 1.5 cm below the line ) on saturday, so i topped it up with 50/50 and it doesn't seem to have lost any more in the 200+ miles i've dones since then...

what else might cause this ??

dodgy tank of fuel maybe??  although i've filled up since saturday maybe there's some crap left behind??
 :-[

i'd appreciate your thoughts chaps....   i'm worried, and have to drive in to London (islington , just off essex road) every day this week.

Omega General Help / climate weirdness
« on: 09 May 2008, 14:47:01 »
every so often... increasingly so....  my aircon/climate system behaves weirdly....

some times, no matter what temperature is selected , only cold air gets blown in...   and often at a higher than expected fan speed....UNLESS , it's on hi, when it blows roasting hot , no problem... and Lo, when it's pretty cold.... not quite icy, but chilly enough....

other times, it behaves as it should.....

any ideas?

Omega General Help / Washer pumps

Omega General Help / Coolant....  Where the hell's it going??
« on: 13 March 2007, 22:25:21 »
Right.....

having given it some time to "settle" after the many patient and gratefully received ministrations  by the saintly Admin crew....   And of course James's heroic battle with the stat housing, ....  ;)

it's still losing coolant.....   about a litre every 2 days.

BUT.

there is NO sign of any leaks...  even at temperature, after a slow journey in rush hour...  with the engine still running... look underneath and it's bone dry... not a drip in sight.

No oil in the coolant either.....  or not so as you'd notice, but i'm having to refill the header tank about every other day...  (alternating now between antifreeze and water... but it's expensive.... )

NO clouds of steam out of the exhaust either....

it's a bloody mystery to me......   and I've learnt my lesson about handing it over to garages & trusting them to find it quickly.....

the only thing that is somewhat concerning, and possibility related, things are.

1) that we get assorted "hot " water/coolant/oily, smells using the heater (especially on full blast....  ) but no dampness in the footwells... and that in heavy  traffic using the heater is required to keep it down to "normal" mid 90's operating temperature....  after a while.... (it now takes a lot longer to reach that point though, having had it's several versions of  niagra falls fixed )

2) that stuck fan/pump/whatever squealing pig noise happens once the engine is switched off, if the car's hot....    you know when a cooling fan would normally come on after you switch off, ... but instead we get this horrendous noise......  which i can stop by turning the ignition on 9but not starting the engine) so that the internal heater cools the systems somewhat...

On a "run" it behaves impeccably....   temperature steady , any rises seem to be dealt with by primary cooling fan as and when required.......   it's when it's been running for a while, then has to sit stationary in traffic that it begins to get toasty....

any ideas????
