I have the Halfords car creeper and it's superb. Need to get the car a few inches higher but it makes it a lot easier to get underneath.

Watch out for 110v lamps and tools, etc. That last set will need a transformer to run from the mains.

Yup, 6yr old house, so digital meter

Ours has just been changed. House is 7/8 years old IIRC so you should be due a change fairly soon anyway.

Yeah, I can't understand it myself. I'm no different to anyone else - 2 freezers though.  Probably more IT stuff on - big powerful PC running this place, gigabit switch, 2 routers, wifi etc, but not over the top.

Kitchen appliances - fridge freezer, freezer, washing machine, dishwasher, electric cooker and hob.

I think we're currently running at 30 odd quid a month. Also 2 fridge/freezers, gas hob, electric oven, all the usual stuff plus an above average collection of geeky gadgets on standby ::)  Computer on 24/7, but much lower power than yours I'd imagine. Couple of other PCs (em.. 3 desktops + 3 laptops @ last count  :-[) on at times. Various routers and hubs.

Generally low energy ligting except in a few rooms. SWMBO seeks out most expensive room to light and sets herself up in there every evening - then leaves the lights on  >:(

House empty weekdays.

I guess if you're running a powerful PC 24/7 that's not insignificant. If it's averaging 200 watts thats £10-£15 PM. Still, that can't be the whole story.

I'd get one of the little monitoring boxes from Maplins and do a bit of detective work..

Order code       L61AQ (frequently on special at 12-14 quid as I say)

Someone really ought to investigate Rupert Murdoch's carbon footprint. His damned set top box takes 20 watts - standby or operating - doesn't matter, 24 hours a day. I presume it's because it stays operating in order to "phone home" during the night. Well, it would if I connected a phone line to it, no doubt.

That's getting on for £1.50 a month alone!

My parents have an oil fired AGA. Makes the kitchen a bit stuffy this time of year but I can vouch for the quality of puddings and cakes it produces. :y Was staying there at Christmas and one of their neighbours had a crisis - their Aga broke and I went to see if I could bodge it repair it in time to cook Christmas dinner.

That one was electric! Can you imagine how much it costs to keep a hunk of cast iron that size at 200 deg. C day and night using electric power!

You can get thingies which go between plug and socket - test every appliance.

Yep. From Maplins. They have them on special offer quite frequently for 12-14 quid. Very handy devices and quite an eye opener at times.

They will measure instantaneous volts, amps, watts and VA, power factor and frequency and will also tot up consumption over a long period so intermittent loads such as a fridge can be measured.

Makes you think though, good job you didn't have an accident earlier when I was ragging your 2.2 trying to keep up with that Tuscan  ::)

Forgot to mention, did you see that car with the 30 poster thing stuck on the back window near Brackley on the A43 at the hill?

I passed it at 120 i er mean 70! It said something about national speed limit for 30, could not read it, as it seamed to pass by rather quick!  ::)
Yes, nearly ran up the back of the idiot....

Ahh, plonkers like that really love my side exit exhaust (passenger side :y) and 7400 RPM red line, I find.

I would flush out the cooling system and refill and see if the mayo comes back. Might also be worth doing a compression check if you've got a tester handy. Other tests are to hold it at mid revs with the expansion tank cap off and see if any small bubbles emerge. Note that if you do this at full temperature it may well boil over, though, and this is normal. Do it wilth a coolish engine. Sounds like you just need to keep an eye on it at this stage. If it's the head gasket it will show more conclusive signs over then next few hundred miles.  ;)

That's not a bad engine (Peugeot / Citroen TU?) and not too cluttered IIRC so I'd say a DIY change would be pretty simple and a good learning experience for TonyH Junior :y There may well be a few more sensors and gadgets to remove and replace but nothing that needs careful setting up other than the cam belt.

For me it has been a little sluggish at times. It's either been instant or it's struggled down a thread at a post or 2 a second.

Yeah, fell over for me too >:(

Think we need TheBoy to go over there and sort out their server. Then again, it's probably getting a bit of a hammering!

Lovely! Looks like it's just come out of the factory. In fact they probably never did such a nice job ;)

It amazed me that they messed about for so long trying to get injection working on the A-series engine - especially the port injection setup which was always going to be a total kludge on an engine with siamese inlet ports. It should have got the bullet as soon as carbs weren't an option, and probably long before.

I guess there was no engine in the parts bin that would drop straight in and no budget to mod anything (but plenty of budget to fart around with the engine management).

what do you reckon to the landrover defender?

I was driving one of them a couple of hours ago as it happens. Not the best example I'm sure. It was lacking sat nav. It needed that to tell you what direction to shove the gear lever in to get the next gear ::)

Very nice indeed. I'm gutted that somewhere out there an old school mate of mine got a job at HSV in Aus. Why didn't I stay in touch with him?

Would be very much worth the cost of a flight ticket to go and play with some toys there....
