what about THESE?

£25 for a pair delivered, is surely the way to go? Especially as you'll need to have the car aligned no matter what sort of shock you buy.

hmmm, good point. I've never thought of Carltons as Omegas.

I was surprised by that listing, as I was expecting new Omega struts at about £40 each. Which I would still buy instead of a used-up one.

The only use of a complete second hand strut is that it allows you to build up a new strut/spring/topmount ahead of doing the actual job...

Indeed , used shocks with 100K / 15 years of being worn out probably not a good move
I'd replace both fronts with new at the very least
then I'd remember the backs are just a nut and bolt to swap and be ordering those too  ;D

which takes half an hour if your slow , so may as well fit new

New spring, bearing, top mount and bump stop/dust cover, as on all of those parts were knackered on every one I've taken apart. It costs about £100 in parts per side, but means the front end is good for at least another 100,000 miles)more than the life of most remaining cars) without issues. All I want from a strut are the rubber isolators, spring cup and spacers/washers. I still have a spare set of those, so would build a complete strut in a spare 5 minutes. Like I did here:

into this

that was several days before we started on the car.
