Just don't do what the dude who won 'Project Thunder' in MaxPower donkeys ago did and put it through a chip shop window!  :D

Very interesting read mate.  What will we do when all the Omegas are gone?

That would be quite a sight on the M25 with full battenburg and lightbar... ::)

Powerflex is the first name in performance bushes, and it was with that in mind that I grabbed some of the firm’s purple polyurethane parts in a bid to improve the MV6’s suspension.

I’d already equipped the rear of the car with a trio of the company’s exhaust mounts (see last month’s project update), but it was the Vauxhall’s front end that became the focus of my attention following the purchase of a pair of new old-stock genuine GM lower control arms.

The factory wishbone bushes were reluctant to shift, but a trip to Cambridgeshire’s number one independent Vauxhall specialist, SOS Automotive, saw them squeezed out before they knew what had hit ‘em! I returned home to install the Powerflex parts a short while later, and those of you who are thinking of treating your own Griffin to this worthwhile upgrade will be pleased to know that the job was an absolute doddle.

With the wishbones taken care of, I decided to apply the same treatment to the car’s anti-roll bar. Regular readers will recall that I removed the MV6’s 3.2-litre engine and its accompanying automatic gearbox in advance of a planned manual transmission conversion. The resulting under-bonnet cavity provided easy access to the anti-roll bar, and it didn’t take long to replace the tired old bushes with the premium quality purple products.

Both sets of Powerflex bushes should improve the car’s road holding and handling characteristics by controlling the amount of flex in the suspension. Tyre wear should also be reduced, especially now that each corner is kitted-out with a Bilstein B8 damper and an Eibach Pro-Kit lowering spring.

In other news, I finally decorated the nose of the MV6 with my new Irmscher grille. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the straightforward fit that I was expecting, and the rear of the paintable outer surround required heavy modification before it would sit pretty. Nevertheless, it’s transformed the look of the front end for the better. It’s just a shame that the car is in need of a bloody good clean... again!

Brand spankin' new genuine GM wishbones:

Powerflex wishbone bushes:

Powerflex anti-roll bar bushes:

New and old alongside one another:

Purple reign:

The car's paintable Irmscher grille surround was an astonishingly bad fit. It required a lot of plastic welding, but the finished part has made a big difference to the front end of the ol' bus:

Sorry but polybushing brand new GM wishbones is sacrilege :o

They retail for about £250 a side and are good for about 100k...

And the polybushes will go on forever.....

I did the same to the Lamforders when I bought them new last year....

Misses the point... Lemforders won't last as well, but it's far more cost effective to upgrade cheap, but solidly constructed wishbones, especially if the rest of the suspension has been uprated :-\

This excellent rebuild doesnt seem to be a project that is "cost restricted" . :)

Which makes some decisions quite strange... fitting a mfl interior rather than sourcing a later one and faffing around with the bootlid to get the lights to fit rather than simply importing the whole thing :-\

Devil is in the details and all that :y

I should add, if it makes the OP happy and keeps another Omega from the crusher, then fair dos...

It does otherwise look smart :y

As explained in an earlier post, I bought the MFL MV6 donor for its transmission (actually, I bought its transmission and the owner gave me the rest of the car for free!). Anyway, the car came complete with a near-mint leather interior. If this hadn't been the case, then I would have looked for the seats from a later model, but I'm quite happy with what I've ended up with. As for not importing a USDM boot lid, I wanted to fit the Irmscher lip spoiler and wing, something that I don't think would have been possible if using the Catera panel due to the width and position of its third brake light aperture. Besides, I like a challenge!

I bought the Lemforders upon your recommendation....?

Anyhoo - The OP is doing a cracking job on this motor, importing the bootlid would have been extremely expensive to do... so he's converted the Omega bootlid instead as they are much more accessible in this country if a bad mistake was made in the conversion.... Id have done the same TBH - its what I did to my Vectras bonnet before commiting to weld in the extension it had fitted...

You're right, for the most part it will be a real stunner, but for what otherwise seems to be a money-no-object project, the work involved in butchering a uk bootlid must outweigh the cost of importing one :-\

Anywhoo it's his decision and he's kind of explained it... :y

As for Lemforders wishbones, I wouldn't recommend summat I have never bought :y

...seems to be a money-no-object project...

If that were the case, the car would have been up and running a long time ago!  ;D
