As much as I like my Omega, I still hankered after going back to a Jag so treated myself to this 😁😁

General Car Chat / Well worth a look...
« on: 11 February 2017, 21:11:38 »
I came across this series on Youtube and found it really fascinating (and I was just a tad jealous at the guy's skills).  Well worth a look if you're into cars/restorations.

and which do you regret getting rid of?

Of all my cars over the years I would have the following list:-

BMW 750i V12 5.4 - Comfort with speed and all the toys of the day
Jaguar V12 XJ-S - Again all the comfort and speed
Mitsubishi GTO V6 3.0 - No comfort (hard as fook) but brilliant fun to drive
Jaguar S-Type Tractor - Nice all rounder in terms of comfort and performace

My biggest regret was getting rid of the top two and certainly the XJ-S which has increased substantially in price since I owned it  :'( :'(

Omega General Help / Just done my throtle body & breathers.....
« on: 07 January 2017, 14:52:36 »
when I took the throttle body off the manifold I noticed that there was quite a bit if moisture at the bottom when looking down into the opening - it didn't smell like petrol so presume it's coolant?  Is this normal or am I looking at another problem?

Omega General Help / Exhaust
« on: 14 December 2016, 16:45:00 »
I've been changing the exhaust on my 2.2 (did my old 2.6 MV6 - seemed much easier).  I'm also in the process of replacing the front pipe and cat (I've read about sticking with genuine but I need car back on the road asap and I've retained the old one to perhaps drop round the Marks DTM to get it refurbed  ;) )

Anyway, took the heatshield off the manifold and was presented with the image below - this looks like a crack to me however there wasn't any 'soot' on the back of the heatshield.

I've noticed that the car doesn't seem to have much low end 'grunt', well less than expected but maybe I've been spoiled from my old S-Type.  Is this a possible symptom or is it just that this is a characteristic of the 2.2 petrol?  Was trying to go for Jame's Omega but wifey put her foot down even though I said she could have the equivalent spend in jewellery  ;D

Checked the postbox today to find a letter addressed to me - did wonder whether it was a lottery cheque or tax refund so got a bit excited  :D

On opening said letter it was notice of intent to prosecute 48 in a 40 >:(

Now when I used live down sarf we did have speed cameras but no where near the number that we have here in Nottingham most of which I know about and respect (stay within the speed limit).  This was a mobile jobbie at the end of a 50mph stretch - a dual cariageway with no residential properties or pedestrian walkways in the immediate area.

In other words is just a cash cow for the local dibbles.

FLY TIP

Just swapped out my front seats and being a responsible resident and council tax payer took the old seats to my recycling centre (dump in old money) to be told they couldn't accept them as they are classed as 'commercial waste' and not household waste.

I queried this as the seats were from my car, swapped over by me on my 'household' property.  They  informed me they could take my battery and my old oil but any other vehicle part was not permissable.  Where am I supposed to take them then ask I - 'to a scrap yard' was the reply.

No wonder there's been such a big increase in fly tipping over the last few years  :-\ :-\

So anybody want a couple of MV6 cloth seats - driver's is a bit raggedy arsed but all the mechanisims and heatpads work. ;D  Failing that does anybody know of a scrap yard in south nottingham?

Newbie Welcome Area / Have come back to the fold....
« on: 25 October 2016, 21:13:51 »
When I was last here I had a 51 plate 2.6 MV6 auto which I maintained myself doing the timing belt, oil cooler, exhaust and alternator.  Foolishly I got rid of it in favour of a Peugeot 407 Coupe which then morphed onto a 3.5l Shogun before progressing or re-gressing to a 2.7l diesel S-Type.

The S-Type is a great car, even the engine is superb if you're doing the miles but alas it has a DPF which has given me all sorts of expensive problems.  It was fine while I was slecking back and forth to London each week but pootling around locally didn't do it much good.  Having just cost me a grand to have a new turbo fitted amongst other things, I decided to cut my losses and get rid.

What to buy in its place?  None of the boring cars of today (by boring I mean hey all look pretty much the same) floated my boat until I started looking and the Omega popped up as a possible.

So I've ended up with an 02 2.2 Sport with a great history, some scabs on the rear whel arches to sort and a new driver seat to source due to it being worn ( think it was probably previously owned by a rather portly gentleman who struggled to enter and exit the car as the door seal is worn from rubbing) but it's had a head refurb, new timing belt and water pump, recent full service and 12 months ticket with the only avisory being a tyre and needing new front disks - £750

Omega General Help / Rear Window
« on: 16 December 2012, 16:01:49 »
Some nice person full of xmas cheer (aka b.stard)  put the rear drivers side window in on my miggy last night.  I've sourced a replacement and have so far managed to get the door card off and and the carrier that's bonded to the glass out however, I'm unsure how to get the side channels out or for that matter how to get the new one in.  Any hints, tips or instructions would be gratefully received.

Cheers

Omega General Help / The Grand Oil Cooler Project
« on: 29 February 2012, 20:07:35 »
I thought it might be useful to document this job, I've printed out the How Toos for the various jobs I'm doing on my car and I'll keep this thread updated with progress.  I'll have some questions I'm sure which I'll highlight in RED in the hope that some of you knowledgeable guys will be able to answer for me. If this post is in the wrong place please move.

Okay, so I discovered that Hellmans had paid a visit to my coolant system so what to do? give up and buy something else or to soldier on.  Well I like the car, it's the 2nd miggy I've had, 3rd if you count the Carlton I had years ago and beside, I'd just had Chrisgixer sort my wishbones out for me.

I decided to sort the oil cooler out and seeing as though I was gonna be buried in the bowels of the top part of the engine, I thought I might as well do some other stuff while it's stripped down namely :-

  • Oil Cooler
  • Cam Cover Gaskets
  • Thermostat
  • HBV

So got all the parts ordered and assembled the tools (why is it you always have something missing?) and got stuck in stripping down this morning.  1st problem, don't have a 12mm allen key to remove the oil filter housing so that put paid to releasing the oil cooler pipes by the oil filter - trip to Machine Mart tomorrow.

Anyway, started removing the plenum, got the inlet trumpets out.  I can't remember the last time I cleaned the breather system whether I had fluid sloching around in the trumpets however, this time I tipped quite a bit out of them, I'm assuming this is a bi-product of the knackered oil cooler? So the plenum is off, got the inlet off and started taking the sandwich plate off. Bugger, one of the bolts sheared off, the one right at the back on the passnger side.  Ended up spending nearly 3 hours drilling and punching it out, luckily, the thread appears alright - hope it's okay when I put it back together and torque it all up. Could anybody give me the size of the bolt as I need a replacement

Back to stripping, got the cam covers off and cleaned up ready to replace with new gaskets. I have 16 o ring seals, where do these actually go as I can't see anything that looks like them.  Next thing on the list was the HBV, this proved staright forward although I tooke the opportunity to remove as much crap as I could and took the hose between the Coolant tank and HBV off and gave it a proper flushing - trying to minimise the ammount of crap left in the system.  Final job of the day before packing up was to replace the thermostat.  What a nightmare, had to give up in the finish as the light was fading. Managed to shead the fixing point off the transfer pipe trying to break the seals - what a really crap design.  I shall be ordering a new transfer pipe and hopefully I can extract the transfer pipe and thermostat as a single unit.

Stay tuned  :)

Omega General Help / Flushing Coolant System
« on: 24 February 2012, 11:55:23 »
Hi Gents

I'm just about to embark on replacing my oil cooler and know I've got the job over flushing the coolant system which I think will be pretty gungded up.  I read on the How To to flush with Road Film remover.  Am I right in thinking that I can put this in and run the engine to circulate and then drain down. Repeat until the water runs clear before doing the final refil or am I missing something.  I've ordered some concentrated film remover - one presumes I need to dilute this before I put it in the coolant system?

Soory if this is a daft question, just want to make sure I get the system as clean as I can.

Cheers
