3.2 Rad fans and temp gauge issue
« on: 17 April 2014, 18:35:33 »

Been having an issue with temp gauge not moving when climate is switched on, switch it off and temp gauge works as normal  ???

This is what I've discovered today, I'll try and explain the best way I can

From cold the rad fans will kick in as soon as you start the car with the climate on therefore keeping the car cool and temp gauge down, as soon as I turn the climate off the rad fans go off and the temp gauge will rise as normal, switch climate back on the fans kick back in and temp needle goes back down....................

Is the prob something electrical from the climate control to the rad fans? It seems the climate is controlling the rad fans on and off regardless of whether the car is hot or cold  :-\

Hope the above makes sense,

Thanks in advance,  ;)

The climate fans will make a little difference to the running temperature in traffic, but only a little, It's the thermostat that governs the running temperature of the engine. The temperature should sit between about 85 and 92 indicated on the gauge. Towards the lower end of this range with the climate on, and towards the upper with the climate off in traffic or stopped.

Sounds to me like your thermostat needs changing.

But from cold the rad fans are coming on as soon as you start the car and climate is switched on?

That isn't normal is it for the climate on / off to be controlling the main fans ?

I probably haven't made much sense in my post sorry Kevin  :-[

Normal. Switch the CC "OFF" and rad fans won`t spin

Confused  ;D

Something is keeping my temp gauge at the bottom and not moving when heating / climate ON........ Turn it off and the needle rises as normal and sits,  and then drops to bottom when I switch it back on, even after a 100 mile run  ???

Still pointing to a thermostat issue ?  :-\

Just as well to check the 'stat anyway. Do the hand check on the top hose. Start the engine from cold, check how the top large hose warms up. It should suddenly get hot several minutes after start up when the stat opens, if instead it warms up slowly after engine start, its the 'stat which is already open. HTMS :y
