Bathroom Q
« on: 08 November 2018, 08:31:02 »

OK, about 7 years ago, we re did our bathroom, replacing all the fittings and tiles.

The bath created a slight issue as we swapped a traditional cast iron tub for an L shaped one with side mounted mixer and a separate in wall shower at the wide end. The plumbing at the side and the quality '60s wall line meant that the bath doesn't sit square to the wall. The three wall sides are all sat on battens, but the gap along the side was uneven and filled with silicone sealant. Over time, this has shrunk, sagged, leaked and generally gone manky.

I have cleaned it all out and have fitted a 40mm wide oak strip around the edge of the bath to effectively cover the gap. this was trimmed to shape both for the taps and an uneven tile and has been completely coated with West System epoxy to ensure complete waterproofing.

The question is this, I have stuck it in place with Gorilla Grab adhesive and without thinking, I used the excess to fair the edges to ensure that the trim was fully sealed in place. Is this stuff waterproof?

Neither the tube or their website make any mention beyond being suitable for interior and exterior and that it can be applied underwater :-\ It is flexible and suitable for gaps which suggests that it doesn't shrink and it is over paintable... so worst case I will use either a bathroom or exterior marine gloss to coat it...

Did you silicone the gap (bath full of water to pull it down) before fitting the trim ?
or are you hoping the trim and  "Gorilla Grab adhesive" will form a waterproof seal ?

sorry DG , I don't know IF "Gorilla Grab adhesive" is waterproof ,should be if it is for external use , but what it says on an advert or side of a tube/tin is sometimes different to real life .
I do know silicone does the job very well, flexes and is waterproof, other sealers like acrylic bathroom sealant etc are garbage .

Bath full of water, and no, no silicone beneath the trim... The idea being that the trim covers the gap and the adhesive attaches the trim to the tiles and bath... Continuous bead on both :y

:'( :'(
sorry DG , I've lost count of how many baths and showers that i have removed such trim arrangements from because they leak, causing expensive damage to plasterwork and floor etc below .I don't know of any such "trim" that actually works long term, seen lots that "claim" to
a good seal of silicone ,left to cure , then fit what ever trim you like over it to hide a gap ,make it look pretty

plenty of trim about to make the gap look pretty AFTER sealing ,
I have used UPVC cloaking strip(available from wickes etc, for round upvc windows) with silicone (anti mould) to tidy up ugly gaps with great success

perhaps try that ,when your oak trim /Gorilla gue fails

I know silicone is a messy ,smelly job  :(, get a kitchen roll, full hazmat PPE  ;D mask off what you don't want to seal or have silicone over (plenty of youtube videos of this)  :y

Trim is this...

https://www.homebase.co.uk/richard-burbidge-flat-d-shape-moulding-white-oak-2400-x-34-x-8mm_p383177

Laid flat with the rounded edge facing the bath...

We had used various purpose edging trims on the previous bath to no avail... Actually this bath didn't replace the original one, bathroom has been done twice since we moved in 18 years ago. Last time was just the suite and bath never quite sealed right... iirc, the final solution was tile beading, unfortunately with the new bath, these weren't deep enough to cover a 21mm gap. Filling it with silicone didn't work over time as it sagged and shrunk... Also it hadn't set in the middle.

This time, wall is tiled down to the battens, ie past the bath edge.

your new bath will be fiberglass / acrylic  :-\
such baths flex quite a bit ,particularly if relying on the supplied leg pack
(I quite often make a full structural base out of tantalized 3x2 etc)
real silicone will cure ,if it takes a couple of layers and time to do so,
or cloak strip to help bridge the gap ,silicone cloak to wall, cure, silicone remaining gap  (strip is about 4 quid) many sizes available  :y all below any trims and prettyness  ;D
https://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-PVCu-White-Cloaking-Profile-30-x-2500mm/p/162619
make a good flexable seal between bath and tile, then worry about aesthetics

As you have already fitted your trim , I hope it works for you  :)

as to the original question of  IF "Gorilla Grab adhesive" is waterproof   :-\

maybe someone else knows from experience  :-\
(not just what internet/tube /advertising bumf says)

As said, bath lip sits on battens on three sides plus the feet. Been in place seven years so no immediate concerns there ;)

Have cleaned away all the excess so will apply a modest bead of silicone to the wall/strip and wall/bath edges.

The strip looks good with the epoxy finish (looks like wet varnish) so painting it would be a shame
