Dashboard disco - advice required
« on: 17 October 2014, 00:03:56 »

Hi,

Driving a P reg Omega 2.0 petrol. Really not a petrol head, so I'm trying to gain a bit insight into my problem, before shelling out a fortune to fix it.

Had the ABS light on a few weeks ago, but it went out so forgot about it.

Tonight, the battery warning light came on. Had no problems at all with starting, electrics, alarm etc.

Whilst driving I thought I smelled a burning smell (electrical)
The rear fog light indication lit up, along with the right indicator light on the dash.
The right hand sight backlight illumination went dim, whilst the left side stayed normal.
The warning lamps glow brighter whilst accelerating.

When the headlights are turned off, the backlight of the dash switched, so rhs in brighter and lhs is dimmer.

I stopped and checked...all lights front and rear ok. Indicators ok. Alarm ok.

Whilst driving home, the battery warning lamp extinguished and the engine warning light has been on a few times.

My question is this. Are the electrics in the Omega such, that I could have problems just on the dash, whilst having nothing wrong with the main electrics, lights, alarm etc.?

Thanks in advance

Not an expert but I would be looking at battery condition/voltage and/or Alternator output and/or aux belt before delving into the wiring etc

edit : and also engine negative connection

I`m sure others will be along with some more helpfull advice, but there are two things I would be looking at myself

1st, the charging voltage from the alternator, and whether the battery or regulator is toast.

2nd, the dash cluster seems to suffer from several faults related to the connector on the back, so I would remove the cluster and re-seat it again on the connector

Good luck with it  :-\

As suggested, measure the battery voltage with car off, running, and at 2500rpm, and post back the values

(or see Kevin Wood's battery charging guide in Maintenance Guides)

Cheers all.

As the tests you mention are double dutch to me..... (i know where the petrol, oil and water go :) )

I went to Kwik Fit instead
Battery
Voltage 13.03
Start Capacity 111%
Good Battery
460A   EN     >0 degrees C

Alternator
Ripple OK
Regul Volt  13.89V
Good
Regul Temp   >0 degrees C

They said the battery was fine

As far as getting into the dash, are there online tutorials or do i need to go buy a Haynes manual?

Thanks again

Dash is easy to remove, just a bit fiddly TBH

There is a how-2 on here I think in the maintenance guides on the main forum page ;)

Did you get the job...?

Yes got the job!!!!!  :D :D :D :D :D

Got the unit out and the problem is the membrane on the rear. Resistor burnt out and a couple of broken copper tracks...

Is this something I'll be able to source??

If it's just resistors and track repairs, it ought to be cheaply repairable...

There are several people dotted around who should be capable, time permitting of course :y
