Title: A record I never thought would be broken
Post by: Viral_Jim on 06 June 2018, 13:23:36
I'm surprised this story hasn't got any airtime on here for various reasons (maybe it has and I missed it  :-\). But the John O'Groats to Lands End unofficial speed record has been broken with a new time of 9hrs 36m. Also without accruing a single speeding ticket, although I wouldn't be surprised if there's a conviction coming.

In these days of significant surveillance, average speed cameras and  all the other nonsense, I'm truly amazed they managed it. It also has the 50mph brigade in a state of nothing short of apoplexy.

Can't believe he wasn't clocked at least once at that sort of average speed , sounds dubious to me .

I would want to see documented evidence.

It sounds like the man who broke the record for the marathon.......with the help of his identical twin. ;)

This was the type of challenge that proved very popular in the 1920's, when a couple of the 'Bentley boys' would 'do it for England' using 6 bottles of bubbly and a couple of large brandies to keep the cold out. :)

Part of me is impressed, and part of me thinks that bragging about the details puts him on the cull list ;D

Even if he gets banned, he's unlikely to be beaten anytime soon ;)

Banned? How? If not stopped at the time, the NIP has to be served (received) on the Recorded Keeper within 14 days of the date of the offence, and contain the time and place of the offence. The story appears to have been posted on 29th May, and there is no info I can see as to when the event took place.

People can huff and puff all they like, but as far as I can see a speeding charge (or any other RTA charge) cannot succeed.

With the amount of average camera installations we have north of the border, I would think it would take more than half his completed time just to travel to Scotland England border.

This screams hoax to me!!!!

.. and by an Audi**** too. Fair play to him. I wonder if he kept up the constant tailgating and weaving into the middle lane to perform dangerous undertakes the whole way? ;)

Meanwhile, if only the energy from gyrating apoplectic do-gooders could be harnessed somehow? Surely, if you crammed enough of them under your bonnet and connected them to some sort of hybrid drive system?... :y

I am not suggesting that he will be or even that he should be ;) merely saying that, regardless of what the sandal wearing carrot munchers manage to make happen with their mock outrage, it's no mean feat and unlikely to be bettered any time soon :y

I think a number of the sandal knitters had suggested a prosecution for dangerous driving - no NIP required, whether that would fly or not I don’t know.

Apparently there is a video of him doing it floating about somewhere, not that they can’t be faked ofc.

Those S5 are a bit of a weapon for the money. The 3.0 version will hit about 450bhp with just a supercharger pulley swap and a remap. Always been tempted by an a6 avant with the same engine. That way you could take the dog along too  ;D.

I think this as much of an achievement as Dick Turpin riding Black Bess from London to York in one night. ::)

......because that really happened as well. :)

I recall Abraham Lincoln tweeting that everything on the internet, including Facebook and YouTube was true :D

To average 90 MPH you would need to travel at 120 MPH for the same time you were moving at 60 MPH......and 150 MPH for the time you were going 30 MPH.

This does not take into account the time the car is completely stationary. Inevitable more than once over 840 miles.

He's between a rock and a hard place, really.  ;D

Nobody will believe he did it without irrefutable evidence.

If he makes such evidence public, he'll be hung, drawn and quartered, if not by the Police based on evidence posted on social media, by the court of public opinion.

For your next publicity stunt, try choosing a record that it's legal to break. :y

e.g.: Land's end to John O' Groats on a Honda C90. :D

Berlin -> Bremen - 410 km - my best time was 129 minutes, using an Opel Senator B 3.0i 24V

I remember going down an autobahn many moons ago....in a Ford Sierra 2.0L at 120mph (max it would do!) and being overtaken by BMW's Merc's etc like I was standing still!  ;D

Getting older, nowadays i prefer moderate cruising. 100 mph is enough. That is Omega 4 pot feelgood speed. No noise, soft gliding. But the Mercs are still there....

I got into a taxi at Munich airport many years back. I was sitting in the back of a Merc. trying to convert km/h to MPH. There were quite a lot of them (over 200, IIRC), and when I worked out the answer I wished I hadn't. :-\

The weather? Thick fog. :o

Driving a fully loaded artic on de autobahns can be interesting.  ::)

You come up behind another truck, check the mirrors, nothing there.  So you pull out to overtake and by the time you are in the outside lane there will be a BMW/Merc sat on your tail furiously flashing it's lights at you!  :o  ;D

To be honest though it must be a bit annoying to be forced to slow down quickly from 160oddmph to 56mph, by some stupid Endlander!  ;D

I remember my 1st time on the autobahn,, bobing along at a nice 120, set of lights appears in the rearview mirror, no bother we banging on, next thing, Porsche 956 comes flying by spitting flames on the over run. Yup he was in a rush.

Isn't the 956 one of those fire breathing Le Mans jobbies? :)

^^^^^^^ that's what it was.

So I asked our host how can it be on the road,, was something to do with a limited type of trade plate, and the car had lights and indicators,, weather this still stands now I don't know.

With treaded tyres, they are technically road legal... Mercedes did a road going version of the V12 CLK GTR... About €1,100,000 iirc 8)

Even did a convertible/targa version...
