General Discussion Area / Thought you might like to know
« on: 30 December 2006, 11:15:44 »
that Halfords have a bit of a sale on at the moment.  Yesterday I bought a new pressure washer for £50.  It is the smaller one - the HP125 which has an average rating of 100 bar.  Plenty enough for car use I reckon.  It can also dispense washing fluid if wished plus comes with a pressure lance and brush.  I won't be using the brush though for fear of scratches.

I then went to look at the tools section to see if there were any deals on socket sets,  but, grrrrrrrrrrr, out fo luck. :(

Will test it out today on the car and the scuttle drains.

of posting a maint guide.  I have written one for an oil change on the V6 seeing as we have Tunnie's guide to the 2.2 and Jester RT on the Diesel.

I have also done one for the scuttle drain clearing.

Could someone let me know.

Both of these tasks I completed today and finished just as it started to rain!

General Discussion Area / Cars you have owned in your driving history
« on: 10 November 2006, 23:56:58 »
Replying to the thread "1970s" got me thinking about the cars I have owned in the time that I have been driving (since 1992):

Here goes:

First car - I tried to stick to Rootes (or at least the old Rootes company) as Dad had a Hillman Minx which I loved.  I got a Talbot Horizon which was the closest I could manage. The reg was A 332 GPJ.  This lasted me all of 8 months before the rear suspension collapsed because of rust.  This number plate stood for "General Pile of Junk"  The sloppy gear change was the thing I remember most and the clattery engine.

I had a Fiesta which I paid £25 - this had 4 months of MOT and gave me 4 months of virtually free motoring.  I did not like it though.

I then moved over to Vaux, getting a MK3 Astra F 68 NNO.  I clocked up a huge milage in this - around 70K in 2 years.

Then got a Cavalier CDX, which I still have, in 1997.  This has 130K on the clock.

Nearly a year ago, I then purchased my Omega 2.5 CDX.

Which cars do you remember (fondly or otherwise)?

General Discussion Area / Not the Omega but a successful weekend
« on: 01 October 2006, 18:58:32 »
As some of you may know I am responsible for the upkeep for two minibuses for the local Scout Group.

This weekend has been very successful in so far as I have changed the oil and brake fluid on one and fixed the spare wheel back, along with engine undertray.  That was yesterday.

Today, I have fully serviced the other bus, including a brake fluid change.

Time taken?  About three hours per vehicle and most of that was spent fiddling with the brake bleeding kit, plus getting all the tools, jacks and stands out and putting away again!

Still, I am quite satisfied with this as both vehicles will be off to Blackpool in a few weeks time.

General Discussion Area / 100th post
« on: 25 August 2006, 13:04:15 »
Well, I know that it is not quite up to the level of Tunnie or Auto Addict, but I have just reached my 100th post.   It took me twice as long to get to this level at the other place.  That speaks volumes!!

Just thought I would share this probably useless fact.

Hope everyone enjoys the bank holiday weekend!

General Discussion Area / Todays Travels
« on: 24 August 2006, 20:57:06 »
Today had to travel to one of our offices.  This meant a journey from Uxbridge (near Heathrow) to Droitwich (near Birmingham).  Distance wise, it is a little over 100 miles each way.

Company policy states that if travelling on company business we have to use a company car.  The car today was a 2003 Golf.  Whilst the TD engine had nice power and crusing at 80 in 6th gear resulted in 2.2K RPM with a wonderful economy of nearly 50 to the gallon, I finished the journey both ways stiff and aching.  I could not obtain a comfortable driving position despite copious adjustments of the seat.

Boy was I gald to climb into the Omega to drive home tonight!

Sorry about that - rant over!

General Discussion Area / Coolant Change - Part 1
« on: 05 August 2006, 22:05:01 »
Started work on my coolant change today, using Markjay's excellent write up [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Gave the bolts securing the undertray a good soaking in plus gas along with those that fix the radiator cover and went out to buy various bits like hose clips, drain bowl and some of Sainsbury's finest mineral water!

Got back home and removed undertray and radiator cover and located the rad drain tap.  All OK so far.

Removed the expansion tank cap and then noted a series of cracks following the neck of the tank. Bu**er!

Pictures show what I mean: (first attempt at posting a pic so hope it works!)

So, went to vaux (dealer only ½ mile up the road from me) to get a price.  £39 for a tank with sensor and in stock!  Why do that have that and not a brake light switch I wonder?

Anyway, I will be fitting a new tank as, whilst I am sure that this one will be OK for a while, I like to do things properly.  Will be phoning Autovaux on Monday to fit out their price.

Still, I was going to take the bottle of and use a bottle brush to clean it up - at least I will have a nice shiny new one now I suppose!
