Back to the other part of the original question, anyone know where the relays are. My front seats have both failed and think relays are an obvious choice before taking the leather apart!

Cheers

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re:  Phone pre-wiring
« on: 15 November 2006, 17:08:46 »
I bought mine for about £85 for the 3100 model. Fitting took about 2-3 hours on a prefacelift Mk1 model. Took slightly longer on the Mk2 version.

Not a difficult job although my control board is in front of the MID display without obscuring it. Tricky bit is routing the wiring - I personally never trust other people with the wiring in my cars having seen the results of bad wiring previously. There was a mic in the car already but decided to mount the manufacturers mic immediately under the display so no disruption to the headlining. Didn't connect to the nokia connection as mine is an Orange PDA thingy. No problems with being heard or clarity, display is adjacent to original MID display so isn't distracting although it does not interface with the MID in my set up.

Haven't set up voice recognition calls yet as no time, but person with Mk2 miggy has done - reasonable level of success making it 100% handsfree.

Not sure if that could apply in this case. The control unit is mounted (in my case) just above the MID display under the dashboard hood. That is where the thing is controlled from. If I was to leave my phone in the boot of the car, it would still work from the control unit using the bluetooth link to actually make the calls.

If they are saying that it needs to sit in a cradle to work then that defies the object of bluetooth hands free kits. If that is the case, I would suggest that all of the earpiece bluetooth headsets which you see people using are illegal, not a chance that they will have a specific mounting cradle for the phone whilst driving.

Probably need some sort of legal or police advice on this one to clarify.

Gary, to confirm,

Ignition off, phone disconnects from car receiver. Only problem I have found is when messing about around the car and the phone rings - if ignition is on, you have to get into the cabin to answer it and talk.

Kit I have is a Parrot CK3100. Plugs into the back of the stereo with minor mods to the wiring loom plug (splitting the plug into two separate plugs) - have fitted to mine - pre facelift 96, also to a 51 plate. 51plate a bit tighter but still do-able.

Give me a shout and I can show you the thing working. PM sent..

I know you don't like bluetooth re connecting etc, but if it is set up correctly then it should just connect when you are in the car and the ignition is on. So long as your phone is connected and locked down to the car kit bluetooth receiver only and is invisible to other users, then you should not have to connect and disconnect all day and the security of your phone, contacts etc should be ok.

Every time I jump in my car and the ignition is on then the phone is wired through the stereo via bluetooth, I don't do anything other than to sit in the car, I can use the phone interface on the dashboard to make or receive calls and incoming calls appear on the screen. The Phone is still in my pocket during this process. Mine is not an official vx product but a 3rd party unit which works fine for myself.

Battery life - thats just down to the phone itself. Might be worth considering a new battery?

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Bluetooth Hands Free Kits
« on: 15 July 2006, 02:22:41 »
Before I start, I have no connection with the manufacturer which I will mention in this.

I have been thinking about a handsfree car kit for ages with the Omega. I assisted someone else who is not on these forums install a Parrot CK3100 kit to his 51plate MV6 estate. I was so impressed (no not a remington reminder) that I bought and fitted one myself.

Dead easy to use, a bit fiddly to install, but for under £90 on the door, who cares.

Wires into the back of the stereo - although only has 2 sockets, so minor butchery to the standard plug is required to separate the power and speaker lines from the display plug at the top. Gubbins etc fitted below the passenger airbag but above the glovebox.

Took a couple of hours to fit but now incoming calls sound via the stereo (muting the stereo in the process), microphone to fit where you want (fitted in mine under the dashboard hood between the centre vents and the MID/TID display).

Works a treat. Can post pics fitted if anyone wants, can show install bits if I have to but this will mean some dismantling to show wiring routing etc...

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: Radio Reception Advice
« on: 15 July 2006, 02:04:46 »
I have a similar thing on mine - radio receives the main BBC stations, Classic Fm etc - the stronger signals, but will not receive the local ones (no local tuning is not disabled - non standard sony unit I'm afraid, can't find an original elite 96 radio for love nor money). Seems to pick up radio reception ok with the 98cdx headunit, but the display is not compatable or bust otherwise something else is knackered so I can't see what it is tuned into anyway...

DAB issues, I remember looking at a DAB radio out of curiosity about 12 months since, there was a particular note on it indicating it would not necessarily be compatable with an in screen aerial but would work on a standard steel rod aerial. Don't know if this is the case or not with the newer sets.

Always worth having one for reference. Only thing is that they don't provide a notes section, so you can struggle for hours following their advice when there is a much simpler way of doing it - and then allowing you to make a note of it for future reference.

Only other thing to be wary of on the omega book is they frequently say 'simply remove.....'. On an omega, most of these simple things are a bit trickier than the book would have you believe.

Omega General Help / Re: My door wont open
« on: 20 May 2007, 01:21:38 »
The deadlocks have jammed occasionally on my omegas previously. If you open the window on that side and then forcibly pull the button up it will eventually open, however the strength in your fingers will be tested in the process.

You might find that the lock sequence is then off for a while but at least the door opens.

My current omega doesn't actually lock the door until the deadlock is applied, and even then it sometimes sticks down usually resulting in this method being applied. It isn't easy but will eventually yield to the pressure.

Omega General Help / Re: Omega vs e320/w124 merc
« on: 25 January 2007, 14:36:24 »
38 Ton truck hit my post facelift miggy last March. Car a write off, front crumpled nicely reducing a good foot of the length, drivers side protection beams didn't shift even though the outside bodywork formed around them. Side airbag worked even though I didn't notice it until I got back into the car...

Result, few minor glass cuts across forehead where airbag didn't shield from flying glass and a mildly stiff neck for a few days.

When the crash happened I remember thinking 'ok, lets see where I end up' whilst feeling very safe otherwise.

Wouldn't want to have a crash in a smaller car regardless of its test performance. The Omega fits around you nicely and has proven time and time again to be an excellent protector of its occupants.

Omega General Help / Re: V6 mpg
« on: 16 December 2006, 00:27:28 »
I get about 21-22 round town, short journeys do kill v6's. Long runs on a light throttle can get about 35 on my 3.0 estate if no stop starts.

Intend to replace oil, oil filter, fuel filter and spark plugs over next week or so, fingers crossed will get slightly better mpg.
Have noticed since it has got colder that economy has dropped, was getting 24-26 over the summer months. Also noticing in the cold that the fuel cut off isn't working as readily when decelerating. Hoping it is a service item desparately in need of change.

Omega General Help / Re: Starting hiccup
« on: 16 December 2006, 00:33:46 »
A friends car does something similar until he tried a different starting method.

If left for period of time when cold, if the key was put in and cranked straight over, it was reluctant to start, taking 2-3 tries before starting. Hot starting was no problem.

Thought about it and considered fuel pressure. The pump fires immediately the ignition is on and engine turning. He now leaves ign on, puts radio in, puts seatbelt on then cranks engine.

Seems to work ok, starting on first crank. Suggested fuel pressure drop. Might be of relevance in this case???

Omega General Help / Washer Bottle - Estate
« on: 16 November 2006, 14:02:52 »
Has any one had any experience with leaks on these things?

I am getting to the point where I need to do something with my P reg estate. If I fill the bottle up it immediately starts draining, leaking from the front onto the floor. It leaks for so long then stops leaking. Obviously with the impending months, I will need to use it a lot so would like to fill it properly then check levels every week or so.

Are these bottles prone to splitting or are there rubber o rings which dry up (car was stood for approx 12 months before I bought it) or is there anything else with them which can frequently go wrong.

I also take it that it is a bumper off job to get to the bottle. I should mention, has headlight washers so more piping and bigger tank is fitted - have also noticed that the drivers headlight washer often takes a couple of squirts to charge up - suggestive of a leaky pipe?

Any advice from anyone with experience getting these things out or with problems from leaks would be greatly welcome!

Omega General Help / Re: HOT SMELL !
« on: 17 July 2006, 18:28:07 »
I am probably off the mark here, but I noticed as soon as I had my 2.5cdx and certainly noticed that the 3.0 elite seems to run hotter than the 2.0 versions. Nothing obvious on the temp gauges but I am often assaulted by hot air coming from under the car when I open my door following a run (when engine up to temperature). Almost feels like there is a hot air blower operating from under the car. I have always put it down to the catalysts running hot and dispersing heat by the front door areas.

If I open the bonnet immediately afterwards, again a massive heat blast hits you in the face along with what I would describe as a 'hot smell'. No obvious smell, just that the heat radiated off the engine bay affects your nostrils. You certainly wouldn't want to be working under the bonnet for an hour or so otherwise you would cook your hands.

If it is a smell (oil, antifreeze etc) then chances are it is down to a leak at a gasket or pipe joint, if not, it could just be elevated running temps in this weather and a perception of smell being due to a very hot hardworking engine.

Pete,

Thanks for the encouragement, I was intending to replace my fuel filter on my 96 elite estate tomorrow.  Got the replacement from VX today, was supplied with 2 plastic clips, when I got back to the car, only one was in my pocket, so god knows where the other one went!
