Title: Display dead
Post by: Gerard Beugelsdijk on 22 September 2018, 11:36:38
Just bought an Omega B Z2.2XE Executive Automatic this week. The display doesn't come on at all.
Checked fuse nr. 15.
If the display has to be removed, please give me some instructions.

I don't understand "head unit". You mean the display? It's the one with no bulbs and 2 connectors.

If have bought another unit. It's not 100% identical to the old one but the grey and black connectors do fit. However, when I turn on the ingnition the display stays black.

What now? Can I test the display somehow?

Head unit = radio unit...

It makes a difference  ;)

Some extra information: the old one had 3 aluminium contacts on the top to set the date etc. with 2 buttons above the display.

The new one doesn't have that and the housing was slightly different so it didn't fit in the dashboard. Luckely the new complete display, with printcard and everything, fitted exactly in the old black housing and then, ofcourse, also fitted in the dashboard. However, no sign of life and now, also, the fuel gauge doesn't move. Is it going from bad to worse?

The screen/display is paired to the head unit... you won't get it to work before the car rusts into a scrap yard  :'(

Sounds like replacement display is the wrong type.

With the NCDx system, you cant randomly change parts, due to the security coding.

Sounds promising............not

But that would mean that the old one wasn't paired either? Sounds improbable (is that good english?) to me.
Doesn't it even light up when you turn the key?? Or some error message??

What screen type was the original?

On the backside of the display you should have a sticker with a two letter code and a GM part number.

Tell us what you have there.

And I second TheBoy, you must have got a display from some other car. All Omega displays fit in the instrument panel.

This might help identify screen type:

Hi,

Thanks for all the replies. Here are some answers and new questions:

The sticker on the back of the old one says:
KJ
and
GM 24459629

The new one has no sticker.

Both units have the following numbers imprinted in the aluminium casing:
65 91 55 03 02 a

Now the question:
Both units have a black 12-pin and a grey 32-pin connector. I've discovered which pins are the nr. 1 and the nr. 12/32.
I've also found wiring schemes. The units stand here in front of me on my desk, so standalone away from the car.
If I wire  the pin which goes to "ignition"(pin 4 to F15) and the "ground" (pin 1 to chassis) to a 12V power source shouldn't the screen at least come on (i.e. change colour)?

Maybe just try and expect some nice fireworks...

Thanks again for all the support.

Gerard

OK, KJ means you have the full colour CID.

Yes, applying power does light it up.  Cant remember exactly what power you have to provide - certainly there are at least 2 0v wires (1 and 32 from memory, BUT DOUBLE CHECK!!)

Probably came ftom a Vectra C/Signum if the outer box was different. Almost certainly not paired to the head unit...

Does plugging it into a different vehicle without pairing render it useless. Permanently.?

As long as no magic smoke escapes, no damage done.

My KJ display I have here on my desktop has 65 91 550302 c imprinted in the aluminum casing.

And the Omega displays all have the three metal tongues on the top side to connect to the two buttons above the display in the instrument panel.

Okay, the 3 tongues are not there in the new one. I hoped the function from the buttons would be found in one of the menu's. So I guess this one is not going to work.

But it still bothers me that neither of the two displays I have now shows any sign of life when you turn on the ignition. Makes little sense and I don't want to keep buying new ones untill one works (I read somewhere that a guy got a working one after buying 4 of them)

BTW: the CD player sometimes works, sometimes not. Could that be solved with replacing the head unit? I got one for almost nothing (dutch like that!). And the radio finds no stations. Is the functioning of the antenna linked to the display. I read that one of the 32  pins is the feed for the antenna.

Thanks for all the support!

Gerard
