Heatshield studs
« on: 28 October 2019, 17:20:28 »

Noticed some of the studs that secure the heat shields under the car near the back boxes have broken off and wondered if anyone has any idea of a repair

Either drill through or cut the head off a suitable self tapping bolt and weld it...

Option three is ignore it.

Did a mod a while ago when my car was still SORNed, in a nutshell I drilled out the original threads and put stainless steel machine screws, grip washers and nuts on. Seems overkill but I didnt want to start drilling holes in my floorpan to then to stick mil steel stuff in there that would just make a dozen areas prone to rust.

On the odd occasion I've needed to remove a heatshield the stainless fittings make it a breeze vs rusty old nuts.  :y

Like anything depends how far you want to go.

The bodge I've seen done on a car where the heatshield mounts have rusted through is 'No More Nails'.....  ;D

you can buy the original type of spot welded copper studs too. They're only a few pence each, which makes £800 for the welder slightly more affordable :) . Fortunately, I bought mine when they were a LOT cheaper.

Fitting the heat shields to the bin is the easiest fix.

My MV6 ran for over a dozen years without any of the heatshields on, due to no studs.

I wouldn't concern yourself too much ;)

Yep, my solution was also to re-install the heatshields..... in my garage loft. They might still be there. ;D

I remember it well, as I broke my nose and ribs a few days earlier, and had to leave a (wo)man down coming back from hols just before.

July 2013 was an utter shit month.

Literally last week I saw the best / funniest heat shield repair ever.

On a focus I think. They’re super common for the heat shielding to rot away around the stud and nut. Normal fix is big washer. However somebody (hopefully not a garage!) had simply removed the nut and twisted on to the stud a plastic bottle top from an oasis or similar 🤣🤣🤣 thought that was pretty cool. It got noted on the invoice 😂😂😂
