Well, that was simple enough.
« on: 26 February 2019, 08:09:38 »

As I have just received a nice tax rebate, decided to invest in a Nest Hello video doorbell.

Took about 30 minutes to install, I can see and talk to callers without answering the door.

It activates the existing chime and also Google Home mini announces someone is at the door.

Bought it at Toolstation at a discounted price.

Pretty chuffed with it.

It's got an added bonus, if a stupid delivery driver decides to ignore the bell and knock on the door with his/her knuckles, it alerts me to a sound and movement at the door :y

Another plus AA just had a look at your IP address and it only took me four minutes to hack into it. You need a stronger password.  Only kidding........

Haven't Google (who bought Nest) just had a major legal kicking for, errr, "snooping" on Nest customers.  It would appear that they kept microphones open to listen and analyse words, which is useful in targeted ads. Which is probably why they bought the line of products in the first place.

That was after they actually added 'microphone' to the list of components in the nest device. They didn't think it important enough.

The amazing thing is it worked first time wired up to a 30 year old Friedland door chime and transformer.

It's much more satisfying telling them to Eff Off though!  :P

That's not restricted to the Jovies either, door knockers of most descriptions particularly those trying to sell me shite or Labour candidates at election time generally get short shrift from me!  :y

Well, errr, uhmmm, not one of me finer moments...

A good few years back, we were having issues with the Jovos calling every other evening, trying to get me to see the light, so I'd got used to just shouting FO and a bit of name calling from the armchair, as you do...

...one evening they were particularly persistent, so I did answer the door, and it was my (then) neighbour calling round to let me know his ill son had just died and there would be lots of friends/family/coroner around, and sorry if it caused us any inconvenience.

Well, you can imagine now I felt  :-[.

So I really try to refrain now.

I think aaronjb's advice is better, as villains are wise to "cant get to door right now" means "I'm out, so treat yourself to my possesions".

So, they ring your conventional doorbell, no-one answers and they assume you are in, so they don't break in and steal your possessions? :o

Apart from setting the house alarm off, I've got them on video ;)

Well, that too! It's no different to a regular doorbell, really, in terms of "risk" (IMHO) :y

Personally if I'm expecting a package and I've had to go out, I'll talk to them and ask them to leave it somewhere/neighbour/etc depending on who I know is around (to be fair, most of the delivery guys who come here come often enough  :-[ that they know where to leave stuff and which neighbour to go call on.. even the Amazon Logistics guys are great) - but if I'm not expecting a package then I'll have a squiz at who is at the door, but I'm unlikely to talk to them.

Usually charity muggers, anyway, around here.

If they do get in then the dog will eat them and the cats will clear up whatever is left, so problem solved  ;D ;D ;D

In some of the channel mags, there are incidental reports of houses with smart doorbells being actively targeted, as they tend to be purchased by 2 types of people - geeky types with lots of valuable, resellable gadgets, and those that are not in often.

Its actually these security concerns that are the reason I don't have one.
