Title: Windscreen chip/crack repar in the Coventry area
Post by: Diamond Black Geezer on 07 January 2019, 10:58:15
It's that time of year again - potato-sized stone decided to smash a chunk out of my 3-yr old screen 'tother day.

Having had about enough for one lifetime of Autoglass and their levels of service, anyone got any recommendations for alternative routes for a repair (hopefully it will be just a repair not a replace)

Ta in advance  :y

Any independent screen company, expect to pay around £200 if a new screen is required...

Ta. That I know, obviously if it's a new screen I will end up going insurance route, in spite of Autofarce's incompetence, but ideally wanted a man with a van who'd be able to repair it with the magic fluid,

I think it's under the 10mm max for within the driver's field of vision. Of course a call to mr insurance man will just go on the excess, so might as well go independent in such a case, that as my aim.

Smart repair done independently should be less than £50 ;)

DBG   IF  you have to go down insurance route & your insurers tell you to use Autoglass . ..
tell them you have had bad previous experience with that shower. They should then let you use another company that they have an account with  . . .did in my case . . . it was Autowindscreens . . .no problem with them . Autoglass were a nightmare   HTH  :y

I had good service from them too a couple of months ago. They are coming again tomorrow to replace the screen in the Merc,so I shall find it if the first time was just beginners luck.  :)

That was the general impression I got from Oofers about Autoglass. So was happy to use them.
But . . they could not even idenitify which screen my 2001 CDX required. T
They even asked me which screen it should be  :o
After 6 weeks faffing about & getting nowhere ,I finally went back to my insurers who duly passed me on to another windscreen company.

My complaint was not about the fitting or fitter  . . .

as after 6 weeks we never even got to that stage   >:( >:( >:(

There's a guy sets up a gazebo on Morissons car park near me every weekend to do screen repairs.I realise this is not entirely helpful to you due to distance, but the point is is there not similar types doing this local to you? Other than that possibly a quick search of tinterweb might throw up some results?

There are some good Resins and Repair Technologies there days for Screen Repairs, budget for £25 to 60, best bet is to ask a Medium Size Car Trader with lots of Cars on the Forecourt they tend to use reliable and good Repair People in the Trade, personally I would stay away from the Guys outside Halfords and Supermarkets they tend to be New Low Value Franchise Traders on a Budget and trying to earn a living and reaching Targets.

Sadly wasted some of your electrons.... the chip with a crack has turned into a full on crack. To be honest I was expecting it but many thanks for the replies.

Would have gladly gone down the repair route, so again, thanks for the suggestions. On the plus side my insurers use Autowindscreens. No personal experience, but just for some flesh on the bone I'm not berating Autoglass for the sake of it... but I won't go into the full story. Needless to say they got it wrong...several times in a row!

So we'll see how it pans out with these lads. Thanks again  :y

Just had another excellent Autoglass fitter. It took over an hour and a half just to get the old screen out of the 190. In the end he had to chop it it into sections. Apparently whoever fitted it didn't intend it to come back out.  He said he had never seen anything like it ::) ;D
He persevered in the freezing cold though, and didn't rush anything and put everything back together just as he found it.  :)

What, you mean these:

https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/www.autoglass.co.uk

4 stars, but with many at 5, with what I would class as rather minor issues for a minority of customers.  Every company gets some bad reviews, as no one is perfect, but I know from my experience Autoglass has always given me 5 star service. In addition more people with an issue will bother to go on a review site than those who have had an excellent service. That is human nature. ;)

That is the review I make count :D :y

...........................now if you are interested in customer reviews reflecting the true situation, get this:

https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/kwikfit.co.uk

And I would endorse those bad reviews 100% after my many experiences of that dreadful company! ;)

Then you add this in for the true picture:

That is what you would call bad reviews! :D :D ;)

I seem to remember You and I removed an Omega Screen in about half an hour, and we didnt know what we were doing as first timers, and managed to get it off with cracking it, which is always a bonus.  ;) :y :D

Your memory is correct. In fact I was telling the story to the poor fitter yesterday as he was freezing his knackers off and trying desperately to cut through what appeared to be the worlds toughest adhesive.  :D

Did you tell him in a "Why are you making that look so difficult? Zirk and I popped out an Omega screen complete in 30 minutes" kind of way?  ;D

No, I thought it best to be a bit more diplomatic, otherwise I would have had a car without a screen.  ;D
