There's some right tarts with more money than sense there who don't get the spanners out very often, that's for sure. ;D

Still, the arcade machine is a nice touch. Wish I had room for a pinball machine in my garage. ::)

General Car Chat / Here we go again...
« on: 08 October 2010, 16:52:50 »
Mrs KW phones up practically in tears at lunch time. Some muppet has reversed a transit tipper into her MX5 in the works car park and made a bloody good job of it by all accounts. >:(

Guy did a runner. Got a couple of witnesses and the registration number though. The unit he was visiting said they did have a guy round asking if they had any scrap earlier. :-? That'll be him. He left a business card. :y

Informed the Police and she instantly got a verbal 7 day wonder over the phone. >:( Who's the rather criminal here?

Anyway, Police say the reg. no. doesn't match the business card. Surprise, surprise! Here's your crime number, now bu66er off, essentially. >:(

Guess I'll have to survey the damage tonight, and check the car for traces of lucky heather and tarmac. Why do I get the feeling this is going to turn into a massive PITA? :(

General Car Chat / Westfield rebuild - and so it begins
« on: 08 July 2010, 17:58:57 »
I've just returned home with a repaired Westfield chassis. New front end and can barely see the join. If that's still the case after It's taken its' first hump backed bridge I'll be a happy man. :y

So, the disassembly now gives way to reassembly. Watch this space.

General Car Chat / Lightning very, very nearly strikes twice
« on: 24 July 2010, 01:03:06 »
Thanks to the cretin in the silver 4x4 who pulled out of a T junction in front of me like it wasn't even there this evening. Forced me to take to the grass verge at 50 MPH. How the break we didn't make contact I'll never know. :o

About 200 yards up the road from where the Westfield pirouetted, as well. ::) I think I need to find a different route to work. ;D

General Car Chat / Ruddy ignition barrel
« on: 07 July 2010, 12:17:18 »
Tuesday yesterday so sloped off early from work to spend the evening at the gliding club as usual. Got in the Omega, key in ignition. Nope.  >:( Couldn't turn the sodding thing.

Fiddled about for a while then raided the service department for something lubricant as a last resort. Bit of hellerine on the key made no odds. Out with the WD40 (grr).

Eventually (45 mins later) it turned, so decided to go home and fix it rather than risk another problem.

Got the lock barrel out, intending to clean out, deburr, remove all the WD 40 and re-lubricate.

More haste, less speed. One slip and boing! springs and lock levers everywhere. >:( Thus began the trial-and-error process of relocating the levers into their respective slots, and the grovelling around on the floor looking for springs. Eventually found all the bits and reassembled.

Problem turned out to be the pin at the back of the lock cylinder that allows the barrel to move slightly outwards to engage the steering lock in the "OFF" position. It moves up a ramp to draw the cylinder back in and this ramp had badly worn. A few minutes with a dremel and a fine polishing stone restored it to something that looked like it might work - for now.

Back together and working smoothly, I'm happy to say. :y

Seemed like an ideal opportunity to have a play with a variable intermittent wiper stalk as well, so will hopefully have that working today.

Just a reminder - if your ignition key starts to feel a little graunchy, sort it out while you still have the opportunity, and take your time disassembling the barrel. ::)

General Car Chat / Tree hugger satnav

I've seen it all now.

vexia ? Yep, I reckon it would. ::)

My TomTom lives perilously close to being lobbed out of the driver's window and reversed over most of the time. I reckon this wouldn't last 5 minutes. ;D
