General Discussion Area / driving lessons is this a good plan?
« on: 03 August 2015, 22:28:00 »
ive given my 16 year old son a few lessons on some private land and hes very good.in a couple of weeks hes got 3 lessons booked with a DI on some private land as hes not 17 till September. now theres lots of DIs round here offering good deals eg 6 lessons for 55 pounds another one has 10 lessons for 99 pounds.so as I like to save money[okay iam tight] I thought he could have the cheap lessons than swap to another one with a cheap deal.
so is this a good plan or will he get confused?

General Car Chat / the hunt is on to replace the omega
« on: 01 May 2015, 18:54:01 »
after having my 2.5td for over 10 years  its now time to find a replacement but I havnt got a clue what I want.the omega did nearly everything I wanted the big let down for me was it didn't have a hatchback so I added a towbar bought a small trailer and job done. I don't know if I want petrol or derv saloon ,hatch or what. my mrs says not another omega because it was to big so she didn't drive it but always enjoyed traveling in it even through it was looking shabby.
so first step is to see how much we have got to play with and after tipping the sofa upside down we have a budget of about 2k and that's all we going to spend.no 500 pound down and 299 pound a month will get you in a new car for 3 years it s going to be cash and well used so today ive been having a walk round some second hand car dealers and just seeing whats on offer.
car 1
its black its low sounds fantastic its british and its £1999 its a jaguar x type 4 wheel drive 2.5 v6 2004 and its manual and will have 12months mot and its done 140000 but looks very nice. nice bloke jumped on me started singing its praisers and asked me if I wanted a drive.so  2mins later iam driving a JAGUAR.well its a nice place to felt smaller than the omega and pulled very well but I don't need 4 wheel drive and its the first car I looked at so said no and walked away.
car 2
my little girl whos 7  has a little quad that goes in the trailer that my old omega towed so a part of me was thinking maybe a van but that's not good for four people then I spotted sitting on the back of a forcourt a Fiat Doblo van 2006 only 51000 miles £1700  only 2 owners and had been converted for wheelchair use so had a ramp in the back .rear seats come out easy so I thought yeah why not.but this only had a 1.25 dti engine.was very tidy so asked for a drive bloke says hes sorry hes by himself and cant leave the yard but as I have my driving licence and id on me he lets me go out by myself.so seeing it was dinner time phones the mrs up to see if she wants to meet for lunch. well it drove okay wasn't fast didn't go very well but was nice inside bags of room and lots of hidi holes.well the mrs takes one look at me getting out of this thing and just says NO. then she wanted to know what I was doing driving a granddad car!and how old do you think you are! this is from a woman who knows nothing about cars.so I bought lunch[ok I was grovelling] took it back to a salesman who was getting worried as he had my id but no phone number.he then tried the hard sell good mpg, plenty of space, would give me 150 off for no trade in.

so that's it so far might tell her about the jag tonight[wasn't brave enough at dinner!!] and see if she wants a look tomorrow

so there I was doing about 50 when the backend locked up [nice blacklines] then a banging and I stopped.a quick look and a broken propshaft [not to bad eh?].called aa the man  who tried to tow it to find the axel locked up[getting worse ]2hrs later[worser] a recovery truck got me home.had a look and the engine  wont turn over either. so I have a locked axel that seized the engine .or a knacked engine  that broke the axel.either way its had its day as i cant see a way forward
she was a 2.5 diesel on a p plate with 275000 on the clock and the mot is up in may
been  a very good car with no big issues  and has never broke  down before  in 8 years
going to have a few more cans and try not to think how iam getting  to work tomorrow.
ta and goodbye

General Discussion Area / i phone help please
« on: 20 September 2014, 14:39:55 »
my 16 year old son has been saving all his spare money and with his birthday money he has bought a I phone 5c[brand new].now he cant use it straight away as I have to wait for a micro sim to come[I pay the bill)
now iam a android man and no nothing about these I phones but am worried about him losing it getting it stolen etc.now ive read a few times that the police have raided houses for iphones that they have managed to track down with a signal from the phone does this need setting up?or is it automatic?,also they have been caught by takeing photos how does that work?
as hes 16 he thinks he knows it all  but I don't and just want to be sure so any tips or things we should do before he starts using it would be most welcome.

General Discussion Area / how can this be right
« on: 21 July 2014, 18:52:24 »
broke my foot and been on crutches for 2 weeks and had a air boot instead of a pot[walked and went to work with it for 4 weeks] so today I got the all clear.went to give my crutches and boot back and got told to but them in the scrap bin as they cant be reused due to h@s rules.now the boot has a air pump in it ,shin guard and a removable inner, so throw the inner away as my smelly foot has been in it sanatise the plastic and away you go. as for the crutches a quick look over for any damage maybe replace the tips and hand grips if you being picky and jobs a good one
there must have been about 50 sets of crutches there and about 30 zimmer frames
what a waste.
