Omega General Help / How does the Vectra V6 3.2 work?
« on: 22 March 2014, 05:59:12 »
Last Sunday I bought a 2.5 Omega estate that vendor had replaced with a 3.2 Vectra. He showed the the Vectra engine. It sits transverse, has no dual rams, strange semicircular steel pipes either side of the head, and (stepping?) motors at the ends of both heads. Does it have variable valve timing?

Omega General Help / What is torque for wishbone pinch bolt?
« on: 19 March 2014, 13:14:56 »
Cnanging wishbones. What is the torque for the pinch bolt locating the steering ball joint pin in the steering knuckle? Is it the 100Nm lower balljoint to knuckle quoted in Haynes? Semms high to me.

X168 JAT 2001 petrol 2.5 manual estate
Bought above car yesterday from OOF member ajsphead. I have a similar but tattier car X84GNB. New car has a deeper rear bumper and the flap concealing the towing hook (or thread) has a lock on it. Is this usual on FL estates? How do I get it open?

Omega General Help / 2.0 exhaust does fit a 2.2 as RobG said
« on: 12 March 2014, 15:22:41 »
Y118NFA 2.2 petrol manual saloon
Monday, son Ben walked in, said "Dad, I think my exhaust has just fallen off". I had a look. Back box had rusted completely through both pipes between it and middle sections, was hanging down and jammed into the road. I knew I had a 2.0 complete system standing up in the garage. I did not know it would fit  a 2.2 until a recent thread on this matter had RobG respond that it would fit. It does, and is quiet too. Thanks Rob.

Omega General Help / Insurance cover when towing
« on: 11 March 2014, 17:38:35 »
Does anyone know whether a standard comprehensive policy covers me when towing:
a) a small trailer
b) a large trailer carrying a car
c) a car on the end of a towbar without its own cover

I was changing the cam belt. I had locked the cams, removed the belt. Then I put the car into gear to hold the crank. Then  I was called away to do an urgent print job. Late tonight I tried to push the car into the garage. It was hard to push It was in gear. Oh dear. I suppose some valves were open and I have bent them.

7 years ago on a V6 with suspected bent valves I was advised to turn the crank 60 degrees from TDC, then turn all the cams by hand, and if they always had resistance, valves were OK. If at any point cam turned freely, then a valve was bent. Does this test work on an inline four, and how many degrees should I turn the crankshaft from TDC?

In the past I have bought from Autovaux. They currently want £42-13 for cam belt kit and £29.00 for a water pump. Are these good value, and is the water pump a good one?

Omega General Help / Accursed immobilisers!
« on: 01 March 2014, 10:00:31 »

My son Ben forgot his towel so called here for a shower. On Departure his car would not start, so he took spare car and left me to repair it. It seemed to start for me, he tried it again and it failed to start again, so I set about repairing it.
I fitted a £30 cheap crank, which made it worse. I fitted a Vx £100 sensor which seemed to cure it. I handed it back to Ben. He said it still did not start.
Could it be his key, I wondered? I had used the spare key. Keys do not fail, do they? I opened up his key, found no immobiliser transponder. Strange. I asked Ben if he had ever had the key apart. He said occasionally when he jerked the key out of the lock (it was on a large bunch of keys) it came apart, but it had been easy to click back together again. Oh.
No-one steals Omegas, do they? I think I will tape the immobiliser transponder to the lock barrel. Is there any reason why I should not?

I am replacing cheap crank sensor (£30) with genuine Vx(£100). PhilRich said it could be done without removing Engine mounting. I have done so up to the point where I have to replace the retaining screw. I find it difficult to align the hole in the sensor with the thread in the block, then insert the screw and engage the thread. Has anyone any suggestions?

Maintenance Guides / Changing crank sensor on a 2.2 petrol Omega
« on: 15 February 2014, 15:58:09 »
In case anyone needs to do this job, here are my notes, having just done the job.I have a pit which helps, but the bones of the job are the same.
1. Remove nearside engine mounting and bracket.
2. Remove dip stick tube.
3, Locate crank sensor. It is on the nearside of the engine, at the front, below the power steering pump. The lead can be followed crossing above the cam belt cover on clips and diving down to disappear below the power steering pump.
4.Undo the single bolt holding the sensor. It has an E10 Torx male head, but an 8mm spanner will undo it.
5. Remove sensor from its hole in the block. Unclip the cable from the connector on RHS top of engine. Tie a string to the connector, and tie other end to a handy hose.
6. Pull sensor, cable and connector out from below power steering pump, dragging the string behind them.
7. Untie string from connector of old sensor and tie it to connector of new sensor cable in such a way that the connector follows it in line with the string.
8. Pull connector of new sensor cable with string from sensor position to connector position.
9. Insert new sensor in hole, align bolt hole with thread in block (I did this with an Allen key) and insert bolt
10. Replace nearside engine mounting and bracket.
11. Test.

Omega General Help / changing crank sensor on a 2.2
« on: 14 February 2014, 12:03:19 »
Y188NFA 2.2 petrol manual saloon
Car does not start occasionally, so i am changing the crank sensor. It's trickier than I expected. I have removed the n/s engine mounting and the dip stick, and can now see the head of the bolt. I can see it from above, but cannot get a socket (Torx female) on it from above. . Any tips?

Omega General Help / OBD II readers
« on: 12 February 2014, 11:04:03 »
Three of my cars are now OBD2 compliant. I see some very cheap OBD2 readers on e-bay. My two 2.2s do not give paper clip codes, so I fancy a reader. I recall in the past some of the cheap readers were deemed illegal, and possibly could cause ECU damage. Which one should I buy?

Omega General Help / Clutch changed - thanks to all!
« on: 12 February 2014, 10:55:33 »
OE03 EWW 3.2 petrol manual saloon police special
Car now fully reassembled and road tested. All works OK, no clutch slip.
I thank all members of this forum for all the advice when I got stuck, and JamesV6CDX for his excellent maintenance guide. I had the advantage of use of a pit, which made it much easier. It still took me about four weeks, so I have a bit of work to do before I can get it down to James' 4 hours.

My son Ben's car. He called home for a shower at midday went to leave and his car would not start. he took his mother's 2.0 Omega leaving me the dead car to sort out. At 5pm I tried it and it started. It's a 2.2, so no codes. What might it be?

Omega General Help / replacing clutch pipe into master cylinder
« on: 05 February 2014, 12:22:15 »
OE03 EWW 3.2petrol manual saloon
I have obtained a new retaining clip and with some difficulty inserted it in the the master cylinder output pipe. I find I cannot insert the pipe into the cylinder. A heater hose restricts access. Is it just that the angle is wrong, or do I have to remove the clip again to get the pipe in?
