Admin please move to maintenance help Coolant Leak.
« on: 22 September 2015, 20:50:25 »

Just noticed some of the red coolant gathering on the front edge of the sump, mostly below the A/C compressor. (I had just done a small top-up when I noticed it).
Now yesterday I heard a mild whining coming from the timing belt area, I narrowed it down to the same side as the A/C compressor, before it went away.

Is the water pump driven by the cambelt?
I suspect water pump, car has done 90,000. Probably never changed.
Any help is apprehended.

I will move, but please start threads in the correct section,

All you cannot access is sales due to a low post count and the guide sections that only the admin team use.

Thanks

Just to confirm, is this a V6 or 4 pot?

As the V6 water pump is aux belt driven and the 4 pot is cam belt driven.

Profile suggests Elite, so either V6, DTi or TD

V6 and TD - aux belt driven. Not sure about DTi

Okay, thanks. I didn't realise.

V6 3.0 Petrol.

I found a cambelt dvd that I bought last year and watched it for exposition. Very good video by the way.
So that helped me answer questions and take a gamble at driving it.

I haven't narrowed down the whining when cold, today sounded like L/H rocker cover.
But the leak (slow leak now) is - I'm only guessing - probably water pump seal.
Any suggestions on what to look for are apprenticed.

The whining when cold may be the air injection system. This only operates when the engine is started from cold and sounds pretty loud. Goes off after about a minute or so. It is only there to reduce emissions when cold and can be disabled safely by removing the pump that sits behind the near side headlamp, or by simply removing the correct fuse.
