Timbuk's non-starter
« on: 27 September 2006, 13:23:50 »

Had a quick look this morning.  Cranks and sputters a bit, but doesn't quite catch.  Battery is a bit low, cranking slowly.  Engine light seems to be burnt out, doesn't come on when key is turned on before starting.  Can't hear the fuel pump running, but the fuse is OK.  Tried spraying carb cleaner in intake to see if it would cough, but it didn't.

Any suggestions?  I am off to research the paper clip trick and make sure that it requires a working engine light.

Bo Bo, do u have a charger or jumper cables?

If the fuel pump isn't running while it's turning over then it's the crankshaft sensor.  ;) I'd bet my left bollock on it.  ::)

Also, It wouldn't cough no matter what you sprayed in there, cos if it doesn't know what angle the crank is at, it won't generate a spark either.

* EDIT * You'll also need a working EML to paperclip it.  ;)

Hi,

Just a thought - although I agree with the crank sensor and it proabbly is this very thing, have you checked the fuel pump relay?  I would also check the location of all the other relays in the case by the ECU.

However, no doubt it is the crank sensor.

Right! If its not the crankshaft sensor we'll have to draw lots to see who comes up to Glasgow to do the deed with Kev's left knacker ;D

You know i'm really hoping it's the crankshaft sensor now don't you.  :o

* EDIT * I suppose it'll make a change from the standard cam belt change party, A knacker removal party.   ::)

Well, you're in trouble!  :o  It wasn't the crank sensor  :P

The a/c is seized.  Took off the accessory belt and it started.  Can a non-a/c belt be used to bypass the a/c?  I think that I read about that somewhere on here . . .

Yep from what I have read on here you can put a V6 belt on which is for a v6 without AC to bypass the AC compressor. :)

Signal to noise ratio is pretty low on this forum.  All the threads seem to go off-topic pretty quickly.  Oh yeah, I'm one of the reasons why  ;)

Do people concur with Nixoro?  If so, then that's what we'll do.  (I don't need a ton of replies, but Nixoro wasn't completely sure.)

I believe Nixoro is correct, just not entirely sure if the a/c pulley will be in way (may need to remove pulley)

Yep, Nixoro was correct, you can get by using the different belt.  ;)

It is not in the way of a direct shot from the power steering pump to the crank.  Don't think anything else is in the way either.

The more i think about this the more dodgy it sounds. That's a hefty engine and it should have fired even with a seized compressor. It should have fired up and burnt an Aux belt, with a lot of smoke as it went. Also, a seized compressor wouldn't inhibit the fuel pump or spark generation, and you did say it was cranking.   ::)

I'm still going with the crankshaft sensor, intermittent breakdown, probably in the cable. The sensors are pretty reliable, it is usually the cable at fault. That happened with mine, ran ok for a few days then bam, same thing. Could be coincidence with the A/C.

Anyway, I'm just packing my last bag as i speak.  ;)

* EDIT * MarksDTM, Back me up.....Please.  ;)

I agree.....it 'should' have started......I can slip the belt on the crank pulley with a ratchet and socket...!!!!

I feel the 'gonad' is still safe......

You can also use an aircon aux belt from a 2.0 16V to bypass the aircon pump to if you struggle to source the V6 one.
