General Car Chat / Corsa C Failed MOT - Boo Hoo
« on: 18 March 2017, 16:03:13 »
SWMBO's Corsa 1.4 has just failed its MOT spectacularly on rust hole in front subframe :'(. Told by main dealers that it is not allowed to be welded (?) and a new subframe is about £500 retail (although I could get it trade) plus fitting. As it is a 2001 Elegance top of the range model, brought by us new and has now only got 49256 miles on it (backed up by all old MOT's and a full service history) and is in immaculate condition we are very sad about this. :(

Question is - are they correct that the subframe  cannot be or is not allowed to be welded? If that is right then it is not economic to pay out circa £350 (trade) on a new subframe  plus fitting costs as car is probably only worth about £400 - £500? with an MOT.
Could pick up a used subframe for about £60 - £100 on fleabay have it fitted for about £150 but there would be no real guarantee of its condition rust wise and thus next MOT could fail again.

Could easily get up to £500 by breaking it as 1.4 engines go for about £300-350, probably alloy wheels with good tyres £100, seats etc £75 plus other odds and sods, but am not in a position to SORN and store it to break it.

So it looks like its going to the crusher which is a great shame as it is in tip top nick apart from this subframe. We have been to see a Viva 1.0SL A/C this morning, 6 month old with 475 miles on clock and are going for this. Main dealer says that one of the grease monkeys races stock cars and banger at Arlington near Eastbourne and he may well use it for that if he wanted to.
That upset wifey who is/was very attached to her poor old Corsa.

If anyone on here wanted to collect it and take it on for repair to use for themselves or to break it for me, PM me, but will need quick reply as its going on the 28th.

Omega General Help / What to try or look for next
« on: 19 October 2010, 15:18:36 »
Changed the MAF on my 3.2 elite the other week as I was experiencing erratic idling when cold and kept stumbling when opening throttle. Also getting codes for fuel trim and lambda fault codes generated on both banks. Couldn't find any sign of air leaks so as above changed the MAF for a pattern one which immediately cured idling probs (rock steady at 500 rpm). Over the intervening period however I now keep getting a 0150 Lambda code being generated and I am sure that my MPG has got worse. Now the Lambda sensor 1 Bank 2 was only changed in March this year so cannot believe this has gone faulty already (was new genuine GM). Put old MAF back this afternoon and am back to original idling/stumbling prob when cold (as before seems to be OK when hot and performance is fine). I am now tempted to leave things be for a week or so to see if any codes are generated. However has anyone any ideas of what else I can do or investigate before I surrender and have to go to the local stealers.

Omega General Help / Fuel Trims and MAF
« on: 28 August 2010, 12:32:29 »
Having read with great interest the thread started by Albatross (http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1219699194/all) I wonder if someone can give me some guidance on the following problem that I have got at the mo (would be especially grateful; for input from Kevin W)
I have had intermittent problems with stored codes 0170/0173 being present that have not lit the EML. These have normally only occurred after a long motorway trip at (70 plus MPH and 250miles plus) and do not seem to occur pootling around locally. I have simply cleared these with my code reader. I should say that this has been when running on my Zavoli LPG system. My LPG installer (who for a change is one of the good guys) has recalibrated and changed the LPG ECU and then lately updated the firmware on it. I was awaiting a trip to Leeds tomorrow to see if this had cured the problem, but in the intervening time  the mig seems to have developed a fault that may point to the MAF. The symptoms I have are that from a cold start the idle "stumbles and recovers" and when you try to open the throttle it will not respond, just chunters away with no power to pull away. After about a minute it will suddenly spring to life and then is fine, performance is what you would expect and no hint of misfire or anything wrong. Once warm restarts are fine. I must add that this happens whilst on petrol, not LPG as the system does not switch over automatically until about 90 secs after start and/or when it is revving high enough.
From what I have read on the forum and elsewhere this could be down to the MAF, is this correct? In hindsight the idle has been a bit stumbly for a while, though nowhere near as bad as now and I have not thought the MPG to be too brilliant either. I have checked for any air leaks and cannot find any. Plugs were changed very recently so do not think it is an ignition issue.
Rather than pay £100 plus from the stealers for a new MAF I can get a pattern one from several sources on Flea Bay for between £32 to £40. Does anyone have any experience of these, are they generally OK. I don't mind shelling out £40 and finding that it is not the MAF in the end but would be rather mortified at over a £100. Is there any way of testing my theory before I shell out? I have read that if you unplug the MAF and go for a short run, if the symptoms have gone that will prove the MAF faulty and needs replacing. Again has anyone any experience of doing that?
Would welcome any input on this problem (especially from Kevin (grovel, grovel) who seems to be an expert on fuel trims et al
 TIA

Omega General Help / Elite Rear Springs
« on: 03 March 2010, 19:02:43 »
The dreaded MOT is coming up soon and I need to check out my Elite Mig so that it is ready. One thing that is slightly worrying is that I heard a large bang from the rear of the car as I was parking it a couple of weeks ago. I am worried it may be a rear spring that has broke although on the face of it all appears OK with car (I have not had time as yet to have a good look underneath and also the weather has been foul)
Just in case I made a tentative enquiry with my friendly storeman at the local stealers who confirmed that Migs with self levelling suspension have a different part number for rear springs than those Migs without. If I do need a set I don't want to pay the exorbitant Vauxhall part prices, I looked at the prices for KYB springs which seem to be favoured on the forum. I couldn't seem to find a KYB part no for the springs for a self levelling Mig. Has any Elite owner on here fitted KYB's to the rear, can confirm that there is a different KYB spring for self levellers and if so knows the KYB part number?

Omega General Help / Which is Bank 2?
« on: 28 November 2009, 12:45:28 »
I need to have a look at one of my Lambda sensors and wiring on my 3.2 Elite. I am getting a code 0150 generated as a stored (latent fault -- ie not yet bringing up EML) and want to check it out. The code refers to O2 sensor 1 bank 2. Am I right in saying that this refers to the first sensor (ie one nearest manifold) on the passenger side? Is it correct that bank 1 always refers to cylinder 135 etc and bank 2 to cylinder 246 on any V engine? Confirmation I'm right/wrong would be much appreciated. TIA

Omega General Help / O2 Sensor Problem?
« on: 04 August 2009, 14:14:56 »
A couple of times in the past 3 months I have found that I have had a stored fault 0150  O2 Sensor (Bank 2 Sensor 1) that has been stored by the ECU. I have come across this whilst checking with my code reader for a fuel trim prob whilst running on LPG.
Thing is, what is this about (is it one of the Lamda's bringing this up) and as it is only a stored code and has not bought up the EML should I be too worried about it. As a thicky as far as this sort of thing goes I would be grateful if some of you cleverer guys than me can throw some light on this.

Omega General Help / Drumming Noise
« on: 14 July 2009, 18:56:05 »
Have been trying to track down a drumming noise that has been driving me mad. Only at speeds between 25-30mph I get a noise that seems to come from the rear which is like you would get if you had a bulge on a tyre etc (i.e. dum-dum- dum- dum). I have inspected rear wheels and tyres (which although the Michelin Primacy's are getting low) but cannot see anything wrong. Have tried putting spare on each side in turn and testing for noise, but still there. Checked rear bearings for play at 3 and 12 o'clock but none apparent and cannot detect any roughness when wheels spun. Noise does not appear to vary when turning left or right but disappears at above 30mph and is not apparent below 25mph. Getting desperate have also checked front wheel bearings for any play or roughness but cannot find anything wrong with them.
Don't know what else to try. Seems as though something could be out of balance. Could this be prop shaft or bearing as autobox has recently been overhauled due to ATF leak (have to say though that the noise was there before)
Anyone got any ideas where to look or what to try next?

Omega General Help / OE Boot Spoiler on facelift Elite
« on: 04 June 2009, 11:59:48 »
Do any of you guys with more experience of taking off body bits than I have know how the OE boot spoiler is attached to the boot lid? Is it stuck on or held with clips/studs and nuts?

I had a very quick look after partially taking off the lid lining expecting to see fixings on the inside but can't see anything on a first (admittedly quick) look. Need to possibly respray spoiler as SWMBO shut lid by holding spoiler and scratching it with her wedding ring!!
Would be much easier to spray it off car for obvious reasons.
TIA

Omega General Help / Help - High Idling speed
« on: 07 April 2009, 19:11:36 »
Having now spent all day replacing the emission control valve on my 3.2 DBW mig (what a barsteward of a job!! Plenum off - Scuttle off and tore hands to ribbons) I have now gone back to an original problem that I had after the car was converted to LPG when I was getting 0441, and fuel trim codes on (both banks) which made me suspect purge valve was faulty or leak in vent pipe to valve.
On LPG or petrol (doesn't matter which) the idling speed will gradually increase to about 1500 - 2000 rpm when the engine is hot and the auto box is in N or P. (when in drive will revert to normal ie 600-650 rpm). When this happens a click can be heard from something at the rear of the engine. Blipping the throttle will sometimes revert back to normal idle which will then gradually increase again. Have had plenum off twice to check for air leaks, checked all plugs and vacuum pipes are connected and have blocked off the purge valve breather port to check that for air leak as well - all to no avail. Cannot see what I could have disturbed to make this happen. Car has been running/idling fine on LPG and petrol for last 4 months with purge valve breather port sealed off while waiting for purge valve to be changed. No codes stored - Help please!!!!!!

Omega General Help / F/L Body Mouldings
« on: 21 April 2009, 14:57:43 »
Having lightly scraped my nearside front door moulding on the garage pillar I proceeded to try to spray this in using the dealers Z147 color code aerosol cans. Whilst the result is acceptable in the short term I either need to:-
1)  blow in the whole length of the moulding and then accept that it may not quite match the rear door moulding/doors
2) get a body shop to do it and match it color wise with a subsequent large bill!!
3) renew the moulding as if I gather it correctly from the forum these are bought color coded from the stealers.

If 3) above is right anyone got a feel for the price (retail.trade etc) and whether this would be the best option. Am I right in saying these are stuck with adhesive to the door andf are not too bad to remove with a bit of heat.!!
TIA

Omega General Help / Fuel Tank Vent
« on: 29 January 2009, 16:12:26 »
Can anyone tell me whereabouts the fuel tank vent connection that goes to the charcoal canister under the o/s/f wing is located? Is it on tank or filler pipe? Can it be got at without dropping the tank? I need to check the pipework/connection as I have been getting Emission Control Codes 441 and have narrowed this down to either a faulty purge valve or leak in piping.

Omega General Help / Stored Fault Codes
« on: 19 December 2008, 10:53:47 »
Have been keeping an eye on two stored fault codes (no EML) 0170 and 0173 after I had LPG mapping redone. I have checked these using the pedal test and have now noticed another stored code namely:-
P1700 Service Vehicle Soon Request from Transmission Control Module
Two questions:
First - Mig is not due for svce until April 09, no other probs, leaks etc apparent. Had it from new and only covered 32000 so is in mint condition. Should I be concerned about this code?

Second - will the other two codes eventually disappear (been there about 2 months now) or should I reset with my code reader as LPG mapping now appears to be OK. Have a trip up to Leeds over crimble so this would be a final test that the mapping is now OK.

Omega General Help / Fuel Trim Malfunction
« on: 17 September 2008, 16:01:18 »
Since having my Elite converted to LPG (Zavoli System) I have a couple of probs that I hope you meega experts might be able to help with.
The first is an EML generated by Fuel Trim Malfunction codes (0170 and 0173). There was originally an air leak on the plenum breather bridge O ring that's been fixed, codes cleared (inc 0170 & 0173) but some 150 miles later the EML light is back. What is a "Fuel Trim Malfunction" and what could cause it.
The second prob which may be related is the idling speed which intermittently seems to hunt when in neutral between 750 -1500 when the engine is hot. I don't think I have any more air leaks but is it possible that could be the cause? (O ring seal on plenum?)
I would like to check and clean the ICV if my 3.2 has one but don't know where it is on this engine or what to clean it with.
Any help greatly appreciated

Omega General Help / Exhaust emissions light - Help
« on: 29 August 2008, 17:51:57 »
Grateful for any advice on the following:-
Just had meega converted to LPG (Zavoli System) (16/08/08). Travelled up to Leeds to see daughter from Hastings (276 miles) on LPG with no issues last Tuesday. Today EML light has come on and tech 2 reveals:-

P0173 - Fuel Trim Malfunction bank 2
P0443 - Vap system leak
P0173 - Fuel Trim Malfunction bank 1
P0308 - Cylinder 3 Misfire
P0306 - Cylinder 6 Misfire
P0700 - Random Misfire

All this seems to indicate air leak and stealers say you can hear leak from back of engine (can't say I can). Apart from a slightly rougher than usual idle when I first noticed the EML, car seems to be running OK whether on LPG or petrol.
2 Questions - Is car OK to drive back 280 miles to Hastings like this so that I can go back to LPG installer and second any tips as to where I can look at back of block when the engine has cooled down!!!
When leak cured will EML light reset without further tech 2?
Only in Leeds till Sunday so would appreciate any quick responses that you guys can give me
