Merc has used a US style foot operated parking brake for a good number of years.  ;)
If they hadn't done away with designers, that would be easily fixed at the next facelift/model ;)

I quite like it there ..... it frees space up in the middle for something else & besides .... I rarely use it anyway.  ;)

Looks like it was caused by the aux. battery being low, seems fine now :y

The brake hold has stopped working on my C class.

Anyone got any ideas please?

A brick.  :y     :D

.. or one of those antiquated lever things between the seats - that never seemed to go wrong. :P

Have you looked inside a Merc? ::)

Merc has used a US style foot operated parking brake for a good number of years.  ;)
.

My E class has this very simple to use & never had any problems with it

They're a bit of a fiddle with a manual box, but are tried and tested :y

So....how would you do a hill start if you need a third leg to let the parking brake off as the clutch bites?

You only put the brake ON with your foot .... there's a hand operated release handle  ;)

So all the design needs is a little light to tell you to keep driving around and avoid hills when the aux. battery level is low. ::)

I still don't see how that would work in a manual.

Left foot on clutch, right on the noisy pedal. Find the bite point and pull the handle on the dash that disengages the "handbrake".

The two downsides (on the merc van I was using at the time) were that it was binary, so if you didn't have enough bite on to hold the van, you'd better get on it quick as you're rolling backwards  :D. And it made a lout "pang" noise when it disengaged.

Not as good as a proper handbrake on a manual car imo, but fine on an auto.
