Back home from Red Kite Country
« on: 21 April 2014, 23:40:08 »

Found this lovely campsite:

http://www.abermarlaiscaravanpark.co.uk/index.htm

... which certainly lived-up to all the reviews.
Nestling in the Towy Valley, and overlooked by the Black Mountain and Brecon Beacons, it's a beautiful location with friendly welcoming owners :y

Great picnic area at the summit of the Sugar Loaf mountain, followed by a visit to the vast Llyn Brianne dam/reservoir:

Llyn Brianne generates sufficient electricity to power 6500 Welsh homes
(According to our 10 year-old grandson!)

Looking north at some of the 65 million cubic metres of water for Welsh consumers

"Wish you were here!"
Mrs Seth and our two youngest grandsons in holiday mood!

A nice conclusion to the Bank Holiday weekend! :y :y :y :y :y

Looks like a lovely spot and the mostly dry sunny warm weather made it a good weekend for a holiday. Glads you had a good time. :y :y :y

Cheers Rod! ;)

Although it was a little cloudy at the time of the photoshoot, generally, the weather was nice and sunny, though a tad chilly in the evenings. Typical Easter conditions in reality.

Nice too, to meet-up with a few of our 'Welland Steam Rally friends' who reside about ten minutes drive away, down the Towy Valley. Plenty of banter, beer, good grub and (well-behaved) wind-ups.
They're brilliant West Walian characters ... just ask any OOFer whose been to Welland! ;D

Excellent. Did you see any Red Kites? Yesterday we saw a male Montagus harrier, a Bonneli Eagle and very close up an adult Golden Eagle.

Brings back memories. Last there in 1978!

If you want to see Red Kites, come to our Wycombe meet......

I expect to see up to about 15 airborne most of the time, and on some occasions many more. A few weeks ago me and grandson watched 17 dive into our neighbours garden, grabbing up scraps left out for them. If we have visitors, I get them set up with a camera and then chuck a couple of pieces of chicken on the shed roof, and just wait for them to swoop down.

Whilst re-introducing of species is a good idea, to be honest, they are beginning to be a pest around here, also becoming a hazard to road traffic, as they swoop down for road kill, totally with disregard to traffic. I have had a couple of close calls myself.

Instead of enjoying yourself up there, you should have driven down the A40 and helped me to move into my new home  ;D

I had a near miss with a kite the other morning going to work there was a crow and a kite in the road in front of me the crow got airborne quickly but the kite was a little slower getting off the ground but we missed each other they are much bigger up close I think the wing span is about 6 foot , it was certainly wider than the insignias bonnet
