3.2 140a Alternator WTD
« on: 24 July 2013, 22:07:15 »

Can anyone help with the above?
Required is a 140a alternator for a 3.2. As long as it works, and the bearings are ok...it'll do...not asking for much am I?  ::)
The current one makes a terrible whining noise, and has very little life left I imagine.

Ideally, local to Oxford so I can pick up...but if not then I'll take a trip.

I would buy new, but after seeing the hassle Chris had with getting the correct one, I probably won't bother.

Would be worth getting your existing unit refurbished as a spare or selling it to me so I can refurbish it as a spare!

Knowing what you've got in mind for it, you need all 140 amps :-X

Customer ones are 120amp on the face lift elites. These are no longer available and the 140 amp is the part you "should" get from vx, if they label it up correctly.

Referring is the cheaper option of you know where to send it, or where to get the parts for diy. Kev has details of a parts supplier. Or Mr omega man sent his off locally.

Bit of a delay waiting for parts to arrive I guess, but you pays your money.... :)

Out of interest, what the difference between the 120 and the 140 amp alternator ?
Just the regulator ?
If so, can you upgrade a 120 by swapping the regulator's over ?

Im sure RobG says the 120a is much more reliable than the 140a. Not sure why though. :-\

The one from the 3.0 is more reliable with regards to regulator failure and reg is a lot cheaper too

Its a different reg setup (looks a different make), the 120 is MUCH more reliable and cheaper to repair.

Within the superior 3.2's there's not much difference. Its the pre face lift Alternator on the v engines that last longer.

(Although my 2.5 failed well early if that the same part)

The radio equipment takes a fair bit of driving - at least when transmitting!
