Title: Tidworth - Wiltshire cambelt/autobox meet - June
Post by: Gaffers on 29 April 2007, 08:41:30
Anyone interested meeting up in june.  As previously discussed I have access to a long pit (3 car lengths at least) and large working areas in and out of hangars.

If someone can bring the BBQ, Ive got the real estate.

Any takers? Dates in June?

I'd be up for that. Not sure I'll need anything doing but I'm happy to come along and I have a cambelt kit to contribute.

Can also get access to an urn for tea making duties.

To confirm we are going for the 30th June.  I will be there around 10am and I will also put of signs to follow from A338 and bulford directions all the way to the hangar where we will be working.

However if you want to come you WILL need to give your names (pm) to me so I can leave them with the guard room.  On the day you will also need photo ID (passport, driving license, etc) to get into the base... heightened alert level blah blah blah....  If I dont have your name you wont get past the guards with the big guns  ::)

Can someone confirm they will bring the bbq and meat?  I will supply fizzy pop and tea.  Also bring lots of tools, I have a locking kit we can use and I cant wait to get in the pit.

Just seen this, count me in for the 30th - Ian I'll help you do your stat, mines still holding and I have the 2 rubber seals you need, all you need is the stat with 1 large o-ring and the new bolts (I also have these if you want)..

I'll be about ready to almost chop my hands off again by then :y

Will there be free Tornado rides? ;)

I am insulted you would even think of associating us with the RAF (Crab Air)

No tornados (pfffft) but I can show you what I drive on a weekday - my big old armoured ambulances.   8-) I cannot unfortunately take anyone for a test drive, it is more than my jobs worth I'm afraid.  But I can start one up for you and let you hear the fantastic noise they make - if only I could my meega to make the same growl without going wideboy with a silly exhaust box.  ::)

Thanks Chris.  I might have done it by then, then again probably not!  I did manage to get a spanner on the bb and move it enough to assure myself that I could undo it.  That's about as far as I got.

Did you find you needed a new transfer pipe?  Don't really want to buy one unless necessary.

Well I bought the transfer pipe (comes with o-rings) and the two o-rings on their own, so I had four, and then ended up not using any of it as it didn't arrive in time when I was doing the job, the old ones weren't in too bad a state so got re-used, along with lots of black sealant around the edge of the pipe just to make sure - all seems to be ok... pipes only a tenner if you do end up deciding to buy one..

oh brilliant - I didn't realise you hadn't used it.   So I will source the new stat and bolts, you've got the pipe and 2 orings.  What did you use for sealant?

Cheers,

Ian

Hey, I might be able to make this if it's on 30th June. Not 100% definite yet but it might coincide with my trip to Devon so could take a day out and call in en-route. 8-)

Gaffers - if I can, I assume you'll need me to PM you my details so I can get past the sentry's. Also, exactly where is the location?

Cheers

WRT location I will be signposting on the A338 (which goes through the middle of Tidworth) from North and South right in to the compound where we will be  8-)   Look out for 'OOF' with an arrow....

I have a cam kit and some axel stands.  I could grab some oil drum bbqs from the cookhouse :D

Other than that i have a few different specialist tools.  I will not have access to the workshop tools so if you have some specialist tools that you think people will need please bring them. :y

REMEMBER - you need photo ID (driving license, passport, etc) to get in.  You will also need a car pass and you car will be searched... :D apologies in advance for the invasion but with the current climate...

ALSO - if you havent given me your name you wont get into the base (I have to leave a list with the guard room)  :-?

Will anyone actually need the pit for gearbox top ups and the like?  That was part of the reason for me putting on the meet here.  I need to know so I can get the keys, but if noone does then it will be less bother...  ;)

That's cheating, TD ;)

As far as this meet goes - IF (and only if) I can get my Estate running on time tonight, then I will be along to it. I'm capable of doing any of the jobs that have been mentioned, but please remember I've only got one pair of hands. Requests are coming in thick and fast via PM - and I've not even confirmed I'm going yet  :o

Just remember, it all hinges on the Estate, and on another arrangement I have hopfully got on Saturday, so there are absolutely no promises...

IF I can make it - then I won't be charging for work at a meet.

Bit of a problem with tomorrow's meet.  I have just been royally f@*ked off by some jobsworth about getting access to the pit.  It seems the guy I spoke to has moved on and some air raid warden ala Dads army type has replaced him, so no pit I am afraid.  There is still plenty of space for other stuff and I do have some axel stands for gearbox top up and the like.

I was thinking of everyone getting there about 11am.  Follow the signs from the A338 and sign in at the guard room - keep following the signs.  I personally will be without my meega as the wifes car is knackered and she has to drive to work tomorrow :(   I cannot give the postcode as it will either not find it on your tomtom or will send you into a river down the road!

Sorry to everyone about the pit I am not best impressed but thats life.  And yes I do have shelter and work space indoors.

Gaffers

Pity I was hoping to do an oil and filter change and sort out my Handbrake

I was going to check my steering out to see if anything was loose and to try and find out why its vibrating and see whats up with the steering box but if there is no pit a curb will have to do :)

Ill get an exhaust on with axle stands :)

rear pads are real easy. may be worth getting some spare antirattle springs as these are sometimes in a bad way...

I've been over that ground when we changed the cams on ClarCE's car. However, I left him to fit the cam covers as he had so much practice!

Kevin

I must apologise for my 3 month ish silence - shocking behaviour I know...

I finally split up with that nagging woman after a further million and one rows about the car, and I am now seeing a much nicer young lady who lives in Swindon  :y

However, as with everything there is a downside - the MPG is killing me! Its costing me £300 a month in fuel to get to work and back, and I've just had a promotion thats going to see me heading up ICT for our group - meaning stupid mileage up to Newcastle-under-Lyme, Stone, Beds and Newbury (I think I'll fly to the Slovakia site ;) ) So theres only one thing for it sadly, the Omega has to go :(  Its on ebay - I'm praying someone will hit the buy-it-now, but its unlikely!

If you see a new Vectra flying up and down the A46 / M40 in the near future, look twice it might be me!

Wondered where you had got to Chris.

But you should do the decent thing and change the cam cover seals before you sell it ;) ;D

Cheers :y

I gave the Omega the full works today in case someone wants to buy it, and when I finished I actually stood back and felt really sad about letting it go!  :'(

I can't afford to run a V6 on petrol either, but £20 - £25 a week on gas is affordable
