International comparison of UK wages 2007-12
« on: 25 April 2014, 00:58:54 »

We have had the biggest drop in real wages from 2007 to 2012 at -6.1% in real terms of all of the G7 countries, due to high, above target, inflation. That is the bad news, but we have had the biggest drop in unemployment which is the plus side and this is still improving.

Hopefully with us starting to see some labour shortages, wages will now rise in real terms for the next few years to start the recovery from this -6.1% drop.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2612079/Brits-suffered-biggest-wages-drop-G7-French-Germans-enjoy-pay-rises-despite-working-fewer-hours-do.html

With currently the highest rate of growth of all of the G7 countries we are now well on the road to recovery from Labours 2007-8 economic car crash.

There is still much more work for the Government to do to eliminate their budget deficit, before there can be any thoughts of the reduction of our ballooning sovereign debts. It is a case of one step at a time.

Though at different places of work, I'm now on less than £1 an hour more now than I was 10 years ago

Experienced labour is a real issue here. Cheap labour is not a problem.

But your not likely to see a wage increase unless applying for jobs elsewhere, as a result of that experienced labour shortage. In other words getting a pay rise ain't happening, so move.

Does vary depending on work though, also where you are. I always wanted to work near or in London due to work always being available.

I've had a pay rise each year I've been at Sky, ranging from 2.5 to 4.5%, along with most other people employed here.

Employment full stop is the problem around here never mind wages  >:(
I think we must be the only place left in the country were the unemployment figures are still rising month on month.
Up by over 3000 since the turn of the year   :( :'(

A sort of relevant comment, not directly concerning wages, but indirectly concerning empolyment, if you know what I mean.  ???

In London if I wanted a job done on the house, I would find a company on the internet, call or email, and someone got back quite quickly, and came around etc.

In West Wales I have recently bought a house. I contact companies, and get zero response, or they just don't turn up, or I'll call you back - eventually ! It really is quite amazing. I bought a house. I have a list of stuff ( Fencing, Tree lopping, garage conversion, plumbing etc etc) and have put aside a decent budget to get everything done, and am having problems finding quality people to do it. I really want to avoid the "friend of a friend who knows somebody" kind of thing.

I am guessing there must be full employment in West Wales !

Moved to Lincoln November 2012.. It's cheaper 'ooop north'. Have to say, it is much cheaper for a great deal of things, couldn't have bought a shed in Bedford for what I paid for this place, but here is the conundrum. How come ALL the tradesmen charge every bit as much as they do 'darn sarf'??? Sympathising with Rog.. IF you can get one in the first place?? Our propert is ringed by trees, no problem getting offers to have the trees seen to. Every other day there seems to be yet another tree specialist ringing our bell? They all stuff a screwed up flier in my hand, 'Oi cud gie ya a quote roit now boy'. They all climb back into the obligatory white transit and leave.  ;)
