General Discussion Area / Multimeter - continuity testing
« on: 10 September 2020, 12:12:30 »
A pond pump kept cutting out which means overheating and now will not work at all. Did a continuity test and it seems circuit is good - same with transformer. Am I making an error in trying to use multimeter for this purpose?

I am using the wavlink £17 from Amazon and it is fine but it is set up as an access point. Meaning I have a lan cable which runs to a splitter off which I have tv, apple tv, xbox, hive and to wavlink. I then connect wireless  to it to give a strong signal at rear of house and in garden. No complaints  but you sometimes need to switch to wavlink wireless from main hub at front of house. You can see signal strength on device you are using.

General Car Chat / Re: Cheap daily runaround car?
« on: 15 August 2020, 22:22:19 »
What would peoples thoughts be for a cheap runaround that can munch a few miles if necessary and is cheap to run but not a wheezy shopping car?

By cheap I mean less than £2K
By munch miles I mean around 20-25K a year?
Cheap to run would probably mean something under 2.0 Litres and possibly a diesel?

I was thinking along the lines of:-

Astra H 1.6 Petrol or 1.7CDTi (although the seats would need to more supportive than the ones in Mrs VXL V6's Design model)

I have been extremely happy with the Astra 2012 1.6 petrol Auto as a station car/runaround - saves dpf issues on the diesels with short trips

Signum 1.9

Astra G (MK4) 1.6 petrol or 1.7CDTi - I still like these and they are simple to work on and don't suffer many rust issues

318d / 320d - A bit more refinement over the Vauxhall offerings.

Obviously I haven't researched in any great detail, i'm just interested in peoples thoughts.

The Volvo V90 has the same lane discipline but very rare I seem to get an issue of unwanted correction. The system does make you use your indicators properly!!

Managed to get myself in the middle of the Greater Manchester lockdown and had to stay in a hotel up here whilst my daughter and her family used the house we have in the area. In installing the app for the hotel chain i uncovered security breach in that if you put in a random booking  ID with the hotel prefix then you got name, address, email, phone number and date of stay of other guests. Now been offered complementary stay in future. Hope they have now fixed it.

As 12 year olds we mixed water with calcium carbide lumps and collected the acetylene in balloons and attached glass tubes and off we went with matches to torch wasps nests - very effective in stone walls.

Shocking - reminds me of the time when I got a letter from HMRC to say I had submitted an incorrect tax return and enclosed a copy of a form that was completely blank. On checking it was clear they had posted their own blank form back to themselves. When I pointed this out I got the comment back that I was making serious accusations against HMRC officers. Of course it all went quiet thereafter.

Invested in May this year and won in July draw. With average luck the algorithm suggests 1.4 per cent per annum

Contrary to expectations - it is raining in Wakefield!!! Reminds me of those immortal words uttered by Noah when the first drop of rain fell on him aboard the ark and he looked to the sky and said " I think its in for't day Florrie"
