I recall some while ago Nick W observed that trade club engine oil is nothing special. It's certainly cheap enough and has never caused me any problems. However I have to collect it from Bristol; Trowbridge only stock the 5 litre bottles, much dearer. I see on e-bay I can get some for £33.99 delivered.

And if you spend only another £173.65 you can have the latest marketing fad with added marketing wank that comes in a special wipe free 'collector edition' container.
It's just oppsing oil, buy the right grade(and 10w40 is ordinary) that fits in the middle of the cost/convenience/quality Venn diagram that applies to you. That will differ depending on circumstances like location, how much discount you can wangle at the counter, how much you pissed off the counterman last time etc etc.
There are other factors: my mileage the last few years has meant annual oil changes at 7 to 9k miles, so I've spent the 'extra' couple of quid per 5l can to NOT have the extra getting in my way.

Agree " Oil is Oil " and has to comply to an agreed manufacturing standard.As long as it meets your specific requirements of viscosity then buy it if the price is good.
I have only tended to buy GM 10/40 as local dealer offers Club Trade discount and had been running the buy 3 get 4 offer so was cheaper than almost anywhere else so seemed logical.If it had become wildly more expensive I would opt for a cheaper 10/40 as it is only oil and doesn't tend to stay in my engine many weeks before it gets replaced anyway ;D

That's one of my differences; my last 5l would be in storage for 3 years ::)

Mine was actually oil tight; I found that 5l poured in at the oil change was just short of the maximum mark on the stick and didn't need topping up before the next one 9000 miles away.

Mines still got that trace of oil forming around the sump lip below the pressure switch as before.
Think it drops around 1/2 litre over 6k miles so no big worry really.

I use GM because its dirt cheap, and Trade Club dealers deliver. For the V6, regular changes is recommended (as they are all high miles now), so just the cheapest that matches the complete spec. But at £25 for 20l delivered from local dealer, that's hard to beat.
For modern diesels, I'd be more fussy. As it happens, for the Jag, one of the tradeclub ones works very well, and only something like £55 for 20l Delivered by a nice man with a van, obviously.

I've been using 5w30, for a long time now, because all the other cars in the family,use 5w30, and it's easier to have one grade,
I'm with nickw, buy the grade I need for as cheap as I can. At the moment I'm using ecp oil as that was cheapest at the time.
