Powerline Homeplug adapters
« on: 07 September 2019, 16:09:14 »

Neighbour without Freesat wishes to access TV catchup on her TV. She can do this on Freeview but needs Powerline adapters to connect her modem to the TV via ring main. I use Aztech which work well. Can anyone recommend better/cheaper W.H.Y.? :y

She will be on a different phase; are you sure Powerline will work?

Huh? Different phase to who? She is not next door, but a few away, and even if on a different phase to me, that is not an issue. As far as I am aware, Powerline plugs are not phase dependent.
My 3 Aztechs work well, but I have had them for sometime, and wonder if there is better/cheaper for her now. :-\:y

No idea if they're better, but I used the previous version of these (exactly the same I'd imagine just a different plastic case) in our last house for about 3yrs, without issue. Never even had to reset them.

Our application was the same, linking router and PS4 to watch things on catch up.

Thanks Jimmy, I looked at those as they are a good price. Only drawback is the lack of plug through option, which may be limiting if sockets are single. :y

I fitted those Argos ones at the In-laws house  :y
they decorated, removed the "ugly phone wires off the skirting boards" then complained that "the internet was broken" ;D
been fitted a couple of years now I think ,and the internet still works  :P

Streets and/or rows of houses in any given area are usually fed with sequential phases from a 3-phase road cable: Red Yellow Green and so on, in order to balance the loading across phases.
Communication over mains power lines relies upon all units being connected to the same phase.

::) ::)
come the 31st of October ,we won't need to use harmonized colours like Brown, black, grey, blue, green/yellow
we could revert back to proper British Red, yellow, blue, black, green/yellow
or Try Ron's Idea

can we use green sleaving over the old stock blue though  :-\
we could have some stickers made
CAUTION
this installation has wiring colours to 3 versions of BS7671
great care should be taken not to F**k about with wires if you don't have a clue

Plus people that do must have good eyesight and must not be colour blind. Like my builder friend who I once caught mis-wiring putting live were neutral should go!  :o :o ::)  ;)

At least he is well aware what green, or yellow and green represents! ;D ;D ;)

He won't make much money if he wears rose tinted spectacles when assessing and pricing jobs  :(

best to shake your head side to side, have a drag of your rolley fag, "oh dear " exhale smoke "this aint gonna be cheap" shake your head side to side, have another drag of your rolley fag, "not seen one this bad for years" whilst exhaling and coughing .

then think of a big number and add as many zeros as you think you'll get away with  :y

I appreciate that Ron, but she just needs communication internally from modem to TV via ring main. :y

We used ours in conjunction with a multi plug adaptor at both ends (D-link manual advises against this as it may effect your speed) due to similar challenges, and again, no issues. However, these may be considered unsightly by the end user  ;).

All comes down to cost vs looks I suppose  :y

I've just been to have a look at her TV, as it is a few years old Samsung, there is no ethernet LAN connector, only 3 HDMI. Will an Ethernet to HDMI connector work OK with the powerline plugs?

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Extender-Ethernet-Byste-Transmission-Distance-Blue/dp/B078JKRZXL/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_147_t_2/257-2448467-1374665?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=207WG7F1S6X6BZYY43TX

Or can anyone recommend a dongle that will plug in to the TV to use her WiFi?

Shackeng, I think those are meant for a different purpose. Specifically, they are meant to allow you to connect a TV to a video/sound source that is a long way away without buying a very expensive (say) 50m HDMI cable.

In terms of a box that allows catch-up. There are broadly two types, the first just connect to the internet and let you stream content from BBC iPlayer etc. The second will do this but also allow you to digitally record programmes (like a VCR), these usually also allow you to "pause" live TV.

The second is typically a lot more expensive and I have never owned/used any so can't really give advice. In the first category, I would go with a Roku box (link below), these are small, discrete and allow you to get content from both Netflix and Amazon Prime, if you have subscriptions that is. Another good alternative would be NowTV, these allow you to get Netflix (not Amazon) and also buy monthly passes to sky sports / movies / entertainment (good for over christmas or visiting family). The cost of these two is broadly similar and both allow you to watch catch-up on BBC iPlayer, ITV player, 4OD and My5.

NO !
those adapters are just used to put either end of a cat 5e/6 Network LAN Ethernet cable to make a HDMI cable long (say to extend it to the next room)
so the TV is not a smart TV (unless you can find an RJ45 or wifi card on it )

so you will need a NOW TV box or similar to talk to the internet and puke out a HDMI TV signal

Jimmy beat me to it  ;D

A Talktalk TV box can record but only DN370 and 372 models like this
compatible with powerline too (many boxes had the adapters included )
DN360 don't record

OK thanks, she only gets Freeview, no dish. She already has an i-CAN 2851T which is not in use as she found that she had to keep disconnecting one thing or the other, and which, while providing HD, in any case will not help with On demand/catchup TV, which is what she would like.  I haven't looked at connecting it as I came across this: https://www.freeview.co.uk/why-freeview/freeview-play, hence the query about adapters, but it sounds as though they would not work with her old TV, and she needs a Smart one.
She currently watches TV through a Humax 9150T PVR, again somewhat long in the tooth. :(

talktalk boxes have YOUVIEW
so you can go back 7 days on the planner
(effectively freeview play, no subscription 320GB recording)
we have one in the bedroom but have sky+ HD with magic eyes too so rarely gets used

Ahhh, so that has some of the functionality of the second category of boxes I mentioned earlier (basically digital VCR with a digital receiver that gives freeview). Given that she has spare HDMI ports, a Smart TV wouldn't be necessary. Either the Roku or the Now TV will give her the functionality that she's looking for - and they're both Wifi.  :y

Also, as another thought, we have two "smart" Sony Bravia TVs but we found, not unlike a built in car sat nav, smart TVs get 'thicker' over time as the manufacturers don't put any effort into updating the software.

Freeview and Netflix here.

A new smart telly might be a less stressful solution and simply live with Freeview  :-\

I have been watching this thread and thought the same thing ;)

I have two Panasonic Freeview Play Smart TV's, one a 50" the other a 55" and I think they do everything I need a TV to do, getting rid of the need for any 'magic box' subscription, with full Freeview catch up that has all the TV channels, programme reverse to start, and internet facilities, oh, and with full Netflix facility .

Now, of course there will be some who must have Live Sport from the likes of Sky or BT, but at least that expensive, ever increasing price, option I can do without :D ;)

It depends on what you are looking for I suppose, but all the complication and expense of other options has to be questioned :)

Possibly less stressful, although given the person already uses boxes with the TV it doesn't seem to be an issue.

Personally I would question spending a three figure sum on a new TV, simply to add the same functionality that the existing TV, plus a £20-25 box would give you. Neither option outlined above requires any on-going expenditure to give the catch-up services the OP was looking for.  :y

A reasonable smart TV doesn't have to begin with a 9...

https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-and-home-entertainment/televisions/televisions/panasonic-tx-32fs500b-32-smart-hdr-led-tv-10179079-pdt.html

Exactly, and there are offers out there for the bigger TV's, and leading up to Christmas traders will offer even more.

All I was really saying that IF the individual is thinking of upgrading their TV, then with "the box" complication, that is cost and practicality, it COULD be an alternative :D ;)

Possibly less stressful, although given the person already uses boxes with the TV it doesn't seem to be an issue.

It depends on what you are looking for I suppose, but all the complication and expense of other options has to be questioned :)

Personally I would question spending a three figure sum on a new TV, simply to add the same functionality that the existing TV, plus a £20-25 box would give you. Neither option outlined above requires any on-going expenditure to give the catch-up services the OP was looking for.  :y

Thanks Jimmy, your options are the cost effective answer that will suit her. :y :y :y

Firstly, no point trying to get Internet to a non Smart TV. And if a TV lacks LAN or Wifi, its not Smart, so can't make use of it.

A non Smart TV can be converted to Smart-ish using a plug in box, the exact one to be what fits your needs, such as Amazon Firestick, Roku, or any of the no name Android boxes out there.

Powerline adapters do mostly work, but are frequently a bit naff, either in performance or the constant need to reset them because they sudden just seem to stop working.  I use them to get wired Internet in my garage, currently its a TP Link one at provides 2 ethernet and wifi on the remote plug.  In larger houses, they can be problematic, but generally fine in normal homes. Sometimes you find a combination of sockets that works better than others, so sometimes a bit of experimentation is needed.

Wifi extenders are universally crap. Always.
