General Car Chat / car transporter/trailer in the midlands
« on: 18 November 2012, 13:58:39 »
i need to transport a car to suffolk in a month or so (and bring another back). one of them is SORN'd so I need a full trailer not an A frame.

does anyone have one for loan (in return for beer tokens of course...) in the midlands/coventry area?  I know its a bit of a long shot....

There's a second hand cam locking kit for sale on a well known site - being the stingy git I am, i don't want to over pay but would like to have one around.  Any idea of the going rate these days?

don't know whether it has been raised before but why is it that they bl**dy torch is always followed by a BMW

could then not get a decent british car to follow it?

and can't they have a few britiash characters to walk with the torch - in my mind I keep seeing Rab C nesbitt with it, lighting a fag and sitting in the pub.

General Discussion Area / where did my post go?
« on: 28 April 2012, 22:16:22 »
earlier today i posted an advert under car parts for sale for a disc and pad kit for an astra - or at least I think I did.  it seems to have disappeared

Am wondering if i imagined doing it or if it has been lost through some systems issue or has been deleted by the admins

anyone out there shed any light on this?

thanks all

Omega General Help / to change the thermostat or not?
« on: 29 March 2012, 09:16:08 »
i'm, getting quite a bit of fluctuation in temperature these days.  running quite cold on a long run but rapidly getting all fans on in traffice

normally I'd live with it but i'm changing cam cover gaskets over easter - does it make sense to do the thermostat at the same time?

If so, should I get VX or will pattern do?  and what gaskets/ seals or o rings do I need if it is worth doing?

thoughts?

General Car Chat / astra H strut bearing ?
« on: 19 October 2011, 13:47:05 »
Here's the problem: fairly random intermittent knock on rough roads.  Seems to be to front on passenger side.

I suspect the top strut bearing ( as its done 90k on rough ish roads).  Is there any way of checking the bearing?

Other than that, the other thing I suspect is droplinks - again, what's the best way of checking these?

thanks in advance

Omega General Help / aux belt tensioner bearings

Is is possible to press new bearings into the pulley? If so does anyone knoe the size?

Failing that, I think it is a new pulley for me

Omega General Help / handbrake problem
« on: 15 September 2011, 18:44:33 »
I just cannot get it to bite properly.

I've stripped the disc off and had a good clean around the drums.  The handbrake is balanced and adjusted as per the guide but it just does not bite.

The mechanism is not siezed or anything like that, showsa have about 3mm on them

Ideas?  would new shoes help?

Omega General Help / blower fans not working with aircon
« on: 11 June 2010, 20:53:48 »
Now this is an odd one.

My battery is dying - well almost dead, so much so it knocked the radio into safe mode.  I managed to bump start but driving home I got some odd behaviour from the aircon:  it is best described as follows (this is a pre facelift non-climate system)

blower set to 3 ( or any other number really) and as soon as i press the aircon button the blowers stop, I can hear the aircon compressor kick in and the Radiator fans kick in as well but I just cannot get the blower fan running with aircon.

I'm hoping a new battery will fix everything but any ideas would be appreciated

Omega General Help / starter failing to engage
« on: 04 April 2010, 16:53:57 »
where do i start:

twice recently I've had an intermittent problem.  The starter has failed to engage.  All i get is a click from under the bonnet.  I could tell the starter was pulling current as I had lights on and they were dimming. but nothing else happens - just a click

It seems intermittent, only need to give it s few tries and it turns over fine and fires up.

I'm still on the original battery but when the starter connects it turns the engine over fine.

where do I start?

I don't think it is electrical as such because when the starter clicks it seems to be drawing power.  It must either be mechanical or could it be the battery on its last legs?

any thoughts or suggested checks?

thanks in advance

Omega General Help / power steering problems
« on: 07 January 2010, 19:20:26 »
Well not so much of a problem but a really odd experience: it has happened twice now.

first time car had been left outside for 4 hours in the cold, second time after stopping for 10 minutes in the cold

On starting up, I have no power steering.  reving the engine a bit does not help, driving 3-4 yards forward and power steering is back again.

I've got no problems with aux belt or tensioner - they are new and greased.  I've not yet checked the power steering fluid level but last time I did it was fine (few months ago)

any thoughts?

Omega General Help / where to obtain coil spring from?
« on: 12 April 2009, 17:30:31 »
just been out for a sunday afternoon and managed to break a rear spring.  I've used KYB before - so happy to use them again.

Can anyone give me a clue as to an online dealer?  I've had a look at the obvious places without much luck

TIA

p/s/ not self levelling before anyone asks

Omega General Help / rear bumper chrome strip removal
« on: 19 June 2008, 18:57:14 »
does anyone know how to remove this.  Some tw*t in a BMW decided to bounce of my rear bumper today and its got a decent kink in it now.

I need to get it off, straighten it out and put it back (and fake a decent bill to send to the tw*t to see if I can punish his wallet)

Omega General Help / cambelt change query
« on: 04 May 2008, 20:22:52 »
ok  so I'm most of the way through a cambelt change (2.5 genuine belt with no markings....).  Hot a few problems:  forgot to get the tension right on the first set up so no 2 and 4 cam jumped a few teeth when I was turning the belt over.  I gently turned them into alignment and reinserted the lock tools.

Have now got to the point where the tensioner is set to the top edge of the mark, all four cam markings are spot on with the timing guage and the engine has been turned over by hand a couple of times without problems.

Have i missed anything or am i worrying unnecessarily...  What else should I double check?

and BTW the DVD is invaluable.  Thanks to all involved.

p.s. title modified as I realised that I couldn't spell last night.
