It all started when the hot water ran cold. On testing, I found the thermostat to be faulty - great, I thought, an easy job and fairly cheap.
Ok, stat fitted, water heats, but only enough for half a bath before the water ran cold.
I took the cover off the immersion to check the temperature setting and found it was half full of water!!!
Switched off immediately and saw that it was coming up from the thermostat tube in the immersion.
First question; why should this be, when it had been perfectly dry up until then? Ho sign of corrosion on the old stat.
With the gate valve closed and some clear plastic tubing over the stat tube, water rises in the plastic to the level of the top copper pipe. Does this mean that the tank is full to this level and opening the bathroom and kitchen taps was not sufficient to lower the tank water level more than this?
So I DO need a new immersion heater after all, and now begins the swearing.......
I Googled ways to undo the old one without damage to the tank and got conflicting recommendations.
I have tried using a spanner made from a hexagon stamped out of thick steel, but it didn't fit my immersion hexagon very well and kept slipping off, so I plan to get one of those box spanner types, which surely must be better?
Google suggests playing a blowtorch on the immersion hexagon, but the idea frightens me - what do you think, any methods known to work?
Sorry for the length of this post, gents (and ladies?), but I want/need a bath soon!!!

Omega General Help / Antifreeze question.
« on: 04 March 2014, 22:18:28 »
I hope this isn't a stupid question, but I am wondering if it's ok to top up what is mainly RED antifreeze (from Eurocarparts) with BLUE antifreeze? Both are glycol-based.
The main reason why I want to do this is that the red stuff was ready-mixed and is just about concentrated enough now winter is nearly (?) over and the blue stuff is concentrated, so if they mix, I plan to remove some of the red and add blue.

Omega General Help / JamesV6CDX = CAMBELT KING!
« on: 18 February 2014, 22:05:06 »
I don't know if this is the right area to post this, but James came to me to replace my cambelt, thermostat and sundry other things and did a brilliant job!
Nothing was too much trouble and he worked with painstaking care in a completely professional manner, so if you ever want yours done, you know what to do.....

General Car Chat / Saloon rear screen wiper.
« on: 05 February 2014, 21:35:16 »
Has anyone ever fitted a rear screen wiper to a facelift saloon? I'm guessing it wouldn't be easy, but although the internal demister is fine, I find the need to see through the external moisture. Is this a crazy project?

Omega General Help / Filling the autobox.
« on: 27 January 2014, 00:34:00 »
I went to Wilkinsons today and they have a 1 litre garden sprayer for 85 pence! Remove the spray head, attach a suitable length of plastic tubing, fill with ATF, pump it up and off you go!
I Googled them online and wilko want £4, so I hope it wasn't just the Chelmsford branch doing a special offer.

Has anyone changed the thermostat on a 2.6 V6 and is it as horrendous as I fear?

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Driver's seat height motor.
« on: 29 November 2013, 10:54:57 »
My seat no longer lifts or lowers, het I hear a "clonk" (solenoid?) when I change from lift to lower and vice versa. Is there a separate fuse for the drive motor, or am I going to have to remove the seat, etc., to investigate?

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Rear cigar lighter.
« on: 29 November 2013, 09:58:16 »
When checking the voltage available at the rear cigar lighter on my '51 Reg. Omega, I inadvertently shorted the thing out, hence no voltage at all!
Is there a separate fuse for this item and if so, where is it located, please, as car wiring diagrams are a nightmare, even to me, an Electronics Engineer with a lifetime's experience!

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Current drain from battery.
« on: 12 November 2012, 09:15:01 »
My battery went flat after a few days of non-use, so assuming the 6 year old battery had seen its last, I bought a new one, but it still happened. With everything off, there is approx. 1 Amp discharge from the battery. I took the fusible links out one at a time from the box over the battery, and removing the middle one from the group of three stopped the drain. I cannot identify which items are served by this fuse; can anyone help?
It has been suggested that there might be a leaky diode in the alternator, but when I put my meter, on AC volts, across the battery there is only a tiny reading, so no significant AC on the output from the alternator.
