General Discussion Area / Another IT question - Firefox this time!
« on: 20 October 2017, 22:48:09 »
Google/Wiki do not help, only confuse, because their solutions do not work: I have WAY too many bookmarks in Firefox (who hasn't?) and I want to delete several of them en bloc, selecting them all in one go and transferring them to a folder to archive them.
Yep, having my cake and eating it!

Omega General Help / De-shitting the radiator.
« on: 18 October 2017, 14:39:56 »
I seem to remember posts on here recommending the use of some kind of detergent tablets in the coolant to shift crap from the system. Can anyone confirm and remind me what they were, please?

General Discussion Area / Is work bad for your health?
« on: 18 October 2017, 10:44:19 »
Just wondering, because I woke up with the snuffles this morning and realised that in the 12 or so years that I have been retired, I've only had one cold/flu infection as opposed to at least two per year whilst working, not to mention manflu!
And just in case any women (Lizzie) tnink that manflu is a myth, current medical evidence confirms that men suffer far worse than women and it is very real..... :P
That's not to say that I am devoid of all of those age-related ailments that befall us, sadly.
Life ain't fair, is it?  :(

General Discussion Area / Irritating problem with Ms Excel.
« on: 17 October 2017, 12:26:19 »
I am monitoring my blood pressure daily and compiling a table and chart in Excel for my GP.
All is well, except that after a computer restart, it is no longer possible to shift active cells in the chart by using the direction keys - left, right, up or down - to move on to adjacent cells to enter data: the chart moves bodcily instead.
I knmow it's only a trivial problem and I can move to adjacent cells using the mouse, but what have I done wrong?

Omega General Help / K-Seal
« on: 16 October 2017, 10:50:01 »
I expect to have hot coals heaped on my head for admitting this, but in desperation to stem my coolant leak, I used the product.
When the stream of abuse subsides, I have a question please gents: berore I replace the radiator, would it be a good idea to drain and fill the old radiator several times, running it up to temperature between fills?
My aim is to remove any residual K-Seal and any other debris from the block which would likely then go on to contaminate the new radiator.
Also, to limit any possible damage done  to my heater matrixby the K-Seal, I kept the climate control firmly on "LO" all the time, which if I understand the working of the HBV, would have kept coolant flow through the matrix to zero?

General Discussion Area / Meeting members (NOT rude!)
« on: 15 October 2017, 21:53:49 »
I've met only 3 members from the Forum so far: James, Nige and Albs (again tonight) and also the Omega geniusSerek, of course [i KNOW that makes four) andwould really like to get to know more.
I wanted to go to the last Marks tey meeting, but it was on my birthday (October 8) so management wouldn't allow it!
Anyone know when the next one will be? I will insist on going, even if I have to sleep in the garage after.....

General Discussion Area / I've got a bike.....
« on: 01 October 2017, 14:53:57 »
.....now to get the lycra! Yep, I've joined the enemy, gone over to the dark side, sold my soul to the devil. Well, at least now I can ignore all traffic laws and traffic lights, etc - as long as I don't kill anyone.
Um, I have a request, if any proper cyclist can help; how do I repair a punctured rear tyre? I don't know how to remove the rear wheel without getting the chain in a mucking fuddle.  :-[ ???

General Discussion Area / Battling with Microsoft Excel.
« on: 25 September 2017, 16:48:33 »
Gentlemen, I need a little help. After duelling across time and space with Excel Database, I have almost vanquished the beast!
I needed to catalogue my daily blood pressure results for my GP, which I have done, basically, but when I print the table (from which I create a chart) the framing/division lines surrounding the data do not appear.
It's fine on screen, but no borders around the data in Print Preview, hence not on the print.
I won't go into the number of ways I've tried, but they are all but the right way!

Help?
Please!

Omega General Help / My wish(bones) has come true!
« on: 21 September 2017, 13:53:33 »
The ATP wishbones arrived today and to my non-mechanical engineering eyesm they look as solid as a brick shithouse, and the other bits (track rod ends and drop links?) look pretty good too.
Heavy, substantial and with pretty welding, all for £70 delivered - seems good to me.  :y ;D 8)

General Car Chat / THIS is worrying.....
« on: 18 September 2017, 22:30:24 »
For no fathomable reason, a tune from the 50s popped into my head - Tom Hark (granddad told me about it)!
I even recalled the group: Elias and his Zig-Zag Juve Flutes!
I just had to call it up on YouTube - sad b*stard!  :-[

General Discussion Area / Not a car problem!
« on: 18 September 2017, 21:42:16 »
I'm sure this is something simple for IT people to solve, but not for me.....
My son has got a new (to him) desktop computer and wants to take his files and probably mine off of this clanky, wheezing XP machine that we share and transfer them onto the "new" machine safely.
It already has an operating system, Windows 7, so that doesn't need to be carried across - just his/our personal files and sites.
May I ask for a procedure in as simple terms as possible, please?

Omega General Help / THOSE wishbones.....
« on: 16 September 2017, 12:30:16 »
Tyre-Smart found my ball joints to be knackered yesterday, but made no adverse comments about the wishbones themselves, so would it be acceptable to replace the ball joints alone?
Ebay are offering two ball joints plus new bolts for £14.95 the pair, delivered.
Your thoughts please, gents?
Then all I need is someone to fit them in exchange for beer vouchers!

Omega General Help / After the MOT…..
« on: 15 September 2017, 19:41:02 »
My Omega failed on HSF tyre, Advisory on OSF and front brake pads.
Kwik-Fit honoured my lifetime warranty on the pads, but claimed that the discs were scored and needed to be replaced. They felt ok to me, so I said just replace the pads, to which they replied that if we only do that, it will invalidate all future claims on the warranty.
Off to a specialist tyre and tracking centre (Tyre-Smart) to have four budget tyres and the tracking/camber adjusted. I asked for their opinion on the discs; perfectly serviceable, they said - so Kwik-Fit were trying to up-sell me!
When they went to adjust the tracking, they said the ball joints in the wishbones were shot. I saw the play for myself and the dramatic way in which the settings changed on the computer screen, so no bullshit from them! They don’t do wishbones anyway, so no incentive to lie.
Actually, if anyone in or around Witham  needs tyres or tracking, I would recommend Tyre-Smart; a thoroughly professional, family-run business.
When I said that it had only just had an MOT and no mention of the ball joint problem, they said how the hell didn’t it fail on them?
It had been my regular garage for many years, so how long had I been driving on dodgy steering?

Please can anyone advise on the best place to obtain Wishbones – and do I need link arms too?
Also required will be a radiator and top hose, together with someone I trust (James?) to do the work, as with my coolant leak I cannot get to Serek’s place without several stops to top up the coolant!

Omega General Help / Tracking and camber settings.
« on: 11 September 2017, 14:29:52 »
As per the title, could anyone please provide the bona-fide (as per WIM?) settings for my 2.6 CDX saloon, '51 Reg, please, as the MOT man failed me on uneven tyre wear on the inside edges and I do not want to wear out two new tyres in similar fashion - I can't afford it!

Also, I had a slow air leak on a rear tyre, diagnosed by KwikFit as rim corroesin and charged me £34 to wire brush it ( ::)) and suggestiong that I got it re-furbished for a long term cure.
Any comments, please?

Ron.
