Still put money on the CIM being on the way out.

Very common, but best way to check for sure is swapping with a known good one, but you do need to do the full divorce/ marriage cycle on both units

I'm not aware of ignition barrel failure being an issue on Vectra C/ Signums

Just to clarify, assume you are talking about the Signum?

In which case (for those that don't know) the 225/45/17 is an OEM option to the 215/50/17 and is clearly stated as such in the owners manual

There is a setting via Tech2 on the Vectra C/ Signum where you can alter the tyre group to match the OEM size - 16, 17, 18 & 19" rims with varying diameters are all OEM options on the Vectra C/ Signum - funnily enough the 18" option is also 225/45 profile

The 225 & 215 17s are in the same group, so according to Vauxhall, the manufacturer, there should be no noticeable difference, guessing the ABS sensor would throw up a fault if the rolling circumference was a mile out compared to what it would expect, as you could have 225 on one end and 215 on the other (but obviously not on the same axle)

We have a timber yard 3 miles away. My friend worked there, and he used to fork lift a pallet of timber into this unit (imagine a petrol tanker body) then seal the end doors and set it working. Evidently it was supposed to force the treatment into the timber. They leave it in for quite a while.
That's all I know about it. ;)

That's the vacuum treatment, either single or double vacuum

From memory the GT2 had the 16v engine as used in the Golf GTi at the time.

The GTs were the 8v but think there was a GTX as well.

Friend of mine had an 8v one (think on a B plate) which he had uprated the suspension to fully adjustable, cracking little car that cornered like it was on rails after that, he eventually 'modified' and ran it in the Slick 50 road saloon championships for a couple of seasons in the mid 90s

Isn't there a process whereby preservative is forced into the wood under pressure so that it penetrates more deeply into the wood? It isn't my area of expertise, but I do seem to recall hearing about that treatment.

Tanalised timber, lots of fence panel suppliers claim their products have been pressure treated.....whether they have or not...

Tanalith C is the preservative and contains (or least it used to) arsenic and generally has a greenish hue, Tanalised isn't the treatment its the stuff they use

Depth of impregnation depends on, amongst other things, the process - single or double vacuum treated - most joinery grade timber, if needed treating, is vac vac treated, same sort of stuff but dries to a very light brown hue, expensive 3 day process if done to the letter (in, treat, correct dry times), however I used to drop stuff off at the old treatment plant in Barking before 8am on the way into London and pick it up before 4pm on the way home, still dripping wet in some cases.

Closer the grain of the timber the less the impregnation.

As most 'cheap' timber is generally a fast grown (south facing) redwood the treatment impregnates quite easily and quickly, when you get to North face 5ths and sawn falling it has to be vac vac treated to be effective

CIM failure is fairly common, there are separate modules for drivers door (DDM) and passenger door (PDM), radio is linked iirc to ECC module - but that might only be full can cars only - as per Omega a lot of this goes through the headunit

Chances are ones failed and affecting the rest but in all honesty only reading the ECU's will confirm if they are still paired

Option two check the big green 30amp fuse in the box at the passenger end of the dashboard as from memory this is the radio and others fuse

At least the top spec Signum is at a reasonable price now  :y


They are available for peanuts, had mine for just over 2 years now, 2006 06 plate, elite spec with full leather and bells and whistles, 80k with comprehensive service history for £2.5k at the time an extra £500 would have got me a lower mileage 57 plate with a couple of the whistles missing

Z28NEL is available in 230 and 250bhp flavour, Z28NET is available in 250 & 280bhp.

All basically the same engine but the NET has a bigger air box and different mapping and possibly slightly different cam profile but I might have dreamt that

Oddly all easily map to around 300bhp and 400lb torque.

Autobox can easily handle this

Real world daily commute with my lead foot is 24mpg, far far better than the scary 14mpg.

Chain problems started on the Insignia, oddly, that is the only real thing you need to be careful of with the NET engine

Big power is fairly easy on these, but would need uprated clutch and an LSD (if manual)

AF40 6 speed box is pretty bomb proof so don't be scared of an auto

Does it have to be a car?

For that sort of cash you can get a modern Transit sized van with all sorts of gadgets, extra seats and engines.

Or the slightly smaller Kangoo/ Connect/ Berlingo small to mid sized vans

Plenty of room in the back and more comfortable to kip in than an estate

If its a car then the £5k gets you a 2009-2010 160bhp diesel Inshitnia estate, if you like that sort of thing

Lot less than that gets you a V6 turbo Vectra estate and they are easily as big as an Omega

E class Mercedes estate?

8ft concrete posts are around £15-20 each, 6ft long 300mm gravel boards are around £10-15, 5ft*6ft fence panels go from around £10 for a cheapy to £25 for an expensive one, bags of cement £2.50 each, bags of all in one ballast £2.00 each - premixed post concrete around £4 a bag.

Remember you need to bury the post at least 600mm (2ft) in the ground so you need to match panel and gravel board size to post lengths - i.e. 5ft panel + 300m gravel board + 600mm in ground = 8ft post

In the better quality posts the panel groove stops about 450mm short at the bottom end, meaning where the most stress is its solid. They are also generally a smother face so higher resistance to frost attack

As for building it, line and level your first post concrete it in with a very dry mix (moisture in the ground this time of year will be enough for the mix), drop in the gravel board and set your next post with it on place then you know it fits and don't look a dick when you cant get the panels and boards in later because its moved  :D

Tip tip:- If you are replacing an old fence, make the first panel of your new fence 3ft wide (or a different width to the old fence) instead of the same width then, when you dig the holes for your new posts its not on top of the old ones and you don't have to dig all the old concrete out

Just to clarify putting anything on the inner face of the glass will cause heat build up within the double glazed unit.

Be it stick on film, blinds or fully boarded.

In the unlikely event you have toughened units it might be ok, but generally all roof lights have at least one side of the DG unit laminate float glass (to stop people falling through it or if it shatters falling on someone) so chances are it will break due to thermal build up

Look for the kite mark on the DG unit, no kite mark then plain float glass

Be very careful sticking something on the inside of the glass, the thermal stress on the glass is likely to cause failure, then you will have a shed load of problems.

I work with glass in commercial and residential applications and there is a lot of science and thermal modelling that goes into what glass, what coating and what is on the inside (blinds, reflective film, air space) that affects end performance and avoids failure.

The structure also has allowances for thermal movement fix that in place with battens and plasterboard and you potentially could have issues

Replace the glass with the PPC aluminium insulated sandwich panels, light enough not to cause problems and a clean install

Do it once do it right

Changed my mobile phone and got sim card upgraded to 4g.

You don't say what you changed it to, but if you changed the phone then there is a big chance the settings are different and its using data without you realising.

Apple now has a setting that automatically goes to 4G when wifi is bit moody, also background app refresh and location sevices

Android also has similar things for app refresh and location services that use data.

I also turn email from fetch new mail to off on iPhone so its only when I manually open email it downloads, on my other Hemorrhoid phone that I use for work, email is set to check every 15 minutes between 630am and 6pm then hourly again to reduce data use
