Exhaust manifold gasket - opinion
« on: 10 June 2009, 23:47:08 »

For anyone who has fitted these on V6's...

Does anyone else think, that 20nm is too low a torque, when fitting exhaust manifolds, using genuine VX multilayer steel gaskets and new studs/nuts?

Although I initially tightened to 20, I then further increased it, to what felt more appropriate.

20nm doesn't seem to close it up effectivelty, IMO...

I normaly do 25Nm....and use a torque wrench.

I have seen to many stripped threads in the alloy casting of the head to go to OTT with them.

One of the key things is to ensure all nuts/studs are tightened to an equal amount to get a constant clamping force across the whole manifold face (something you cant do with a calibrated arm)

I've seen you do a manifold gasket with a calibrated arm  :P  ::) - although I guess you arm is particularly calibrated  :y

Agree 20 seems low, nipped up another 'bit' by hand after.
