In 1978 just after I passed my driving test Iwas stopped by two coppers for having a tail light out.
Near the end of the conversation the Sarge then added that I had been speeding and he was doing me for it.
I knew I hadnt been speeding. I was in an HB Viva in thick fog on a road I had never seen before.
I told him this and they both just looked at me smugly and said its our word against yours.
1st April 2009 I was on two wheels on the M11, speed varying between 120 and 140.
A batenburged Volve came flying down the road behind me on blues & twos and when level pointed for me to pull over.
My life flashed before my eyes. I knew I was going to lose my licence.
I had recently lost my job of 20 years which was close to home, but found another one 17 miles away, with no options for buses or trains for commuting.
After scaring the bejaysus out of me and informing me they had me at 125, the Copper had a bit of a chat and finished up with "this country is in a shit enough state these days without me taking a blokes livelyhood away from him. If you promise me you will slow down , I will call it 95 and you will get a £60 fine and three points. Are you happy with that ?"
Needless to say I thanked him most profusely.
So it all balances out in the long run I suppose.
