Omega General Help / 3.2 issue.

The car: 3.2 manual estate. Been parked up for 3 years. Fresh fuel added then driven 77 miles. Was fine initially, albeit with lifter noise, but by end of journey car cutting out and missing, eventually stalling. Won't rev past 4k.

Codes 0340 and 0300.

Car has since been sat a week.

Coil packs off and plugs out. 135 pack as new, plugs fouled and stink of fuel. 246 pack shot and plugs fouled no smell of fuel.

Plugs cleaned and refitted along with v good 246 replacement pack. Known good cam sensor also fitted.

Can of lifter treatment added.

Car then started and allowed to idle. Still very tappety but improving slightly as it warmed up. All the lifter noise is from the rearmost two tappets on 5 (1 exhaust and 1 inlet) I suspect that with a couple of oil changes and some more treatment these will eventually settle down.

As the car warmed up it started to mis. Revs applied and whilst it revs OK, still no more than 4k. Lift off and it splutters. Unplugging MAF made no difference. Repeat and it stalls. Codes 0340 and 0300.

135 flooding. Pull fuse 18 and it starts fine but idles rough when warm. Start WOT and again starts fine and revs as soon as running.

Current thinking is that the crank sensor is starting to breakdown causing an intermittent failure which shuts the engine down mid flow.  :-\

The verdict:

Front top mounts are shot, rear springs heavily corroded.

Remainder of suspension generally tired.

Exhaust back box on last legs.

Some general underbody corrosion, otherwise the rest is perfectly serviceable.

A quick tot up suggests about £530 in bits to sort the shit list.

Actual MoT not due until November so plenty of time to get done (and for other things to crop up...).

Garage have suggested that I book it in on the day it's due rather than early, ie next week, on the basis that if it fails it will become immediately unusable, no 'pretend it hasn't been tested and using the car until previous test expires' as before.

I am thinking do the immediate bits then get it tested so that I know I have another year or more from it rather than chance it. Equally I could just drive it until November and save and plan to replace it then...

Currently sat at LPA waiting for the orange bus to eventually arrive. As is common outside Blighty, the airport shares its runway with a military base...

Periodically over the last two weeks there's been some hefty rumbling going on, with no apparent cause... Did wonder initially if La Palma had finally fallen over ::)

Just heard it again, only a lot louder. Looked out of the window just in time to see three F18s taking of in formation  8)

Looking at a slight change of job. And haven't really had to worry about WTD before... Driving hours have usually been the limiting factor when doing distance multidrop work... besides that was part time.

Job I am looking at is 4 on 4 off 12 hour shifts but actual driving time is probably no more than 2-3 hours rest is loading/unloading cages. Consequently the firm is quite hot on the WTD 48 hour average.

Overtime is readily available and the difference in pay means that I will be able to make some positive financial headway without doing 300 hour months.

4/4 gives me a 17 week average of 38.82 hours or 660 hours (I have deducted the hour break each shift.

48 hours per week over 17 weeks gives me 816 hours... Which equates to a potential extra of 156 hours O/T over the 17 weeks.

So my question is this:

The 4/4 shift typically gives me 9 weeks of 4 shifts and 8 weeks of 3 shifts... Am I compliant if I do two days overtime on 7 of the 3 shift weeks?

As I understand it, the 17 week reference period is a rolling one, so by not doing OT on the 4 shift weeks I should keep the average within limits.

The reason for the question is twofold; firstly, to get a clearer financial perspective before I commit; and secondly, to make sure that I understand the WTD ready for an assessment next week.

Some of you might be familiar with a band called Mercy Me. Equally some more of you might be familiar with their song "I can only imagine".

A film was made about how this song came to be written by the band's front man, Bart Millard.

Trailer

The film was released in the US in March and is the fourth highest grossing Christian themed film. Ever.

It achieved opening box office sales of over $80million. Inspite of this achievement, it has yet to be released in the UK and there is a petition afoot to try and persuade Cineworld to release it here.

Petition

Obviously it might not be to everyone's taste, but it is nevertheless a powerful story that deserves to be told, especially in our current egg shell environment. Other faiths are over exposed to the detriment of traditional beliefs and releasing this film here would go some way to addressing that.

It's karaoke night here, and assuming I have drunk enough to have no shame by 8pm, I might have a bash at Rhinestone Cowboy...

That said, this is a touch clichéd as every drunken mong can make a reasonable stab at it... Even me :D

My alternative idea is Aqua Barbie Girl done as a dry monologue done Bill Nighy stylee :o

So, any other ideas, that might spare me from abject humiliation... I'm here for a fortnight, feel free to share ;)

Am about six pints into the evening if that helps...

As above.

MoT failure for sill corrosion both sides and NSR brake pipe. Advisories for front chassis rails.

Good bits:
Xenons with washers, 4 winter tyres with decent tread on reasonable CD wheels, recent new wishbones with front poly bushes and arb bushes, drop links, track Rods, new Sachs shocks all round with new fittings and top mounts and bearings, new springs all round, Pedders rear subframe donuts. Fully serviced when I bought it, including breather clean and camcover gasket, thermostat, hbv and coolant change.

Suspension has done about 2,500 miles.

Drives really well.

Bad bits:
Scrubs up OK, but lots of car park drinks. Rear arches starting to go, along with lower doors. Could benefit from a cam and crank sensor, but still perfectly usable, (neither stops the manual 2.2s from being driven). Sills can either be patched or replaced... Couple of small holes towards the front and both rear ends.

If repaired and not abused, then realistically it should have another couple of years in it.

Obviously being sold as spares or repairs, and open to sensible offers, but be mindful of the value of the suspension parts...

Ideally looking for £350 ono.
