General Discussion Area / Games consoles
« on: 18 December 2016, 10:05:13 »
Whilst naughtily scoffing breakie in the lounge watch some trash on the telly (before I go back upstairs to carry on working  >:(), an advert for a games console (think it was Game's expensive offer for seXBOX One with Fifa) came on, promoting a discussion on console prices.  Not that I think they've gone up much - original gayStation was 200, Wii debuted at 175, even the SNES was 130 25yrs ago.

Which got us onto another discussion, about the SNES, as I bought one purely to play Super Mario World.  To this day, I maintain this remains the best platform game ever made, as yet unsurpassed.

Which also cause further discussions about other games, so here is my list of all time tops:

Platform: Super Mario World (SNES)
FPG: DOOM/DOOMII (PC)
Car racing: Grand Prix 2 (PC) / Mario Kart Wii

With regard to DOOM, obviously graphics and game engine capabilities have dramatically improved, yet nothing holds the atmosphere of the original.  And nothing else has ever ended up in my nightmares :P

Grand Prix 2 was superseded with Grand Prix 3 and 4, but these were in reality graphical updates, and to make it Windows compatible. Its Multiplayer was only local across serial cable though.

Mario Kart Wii gets a mention for its simplicity, and the online with friends capabilities until they shut the servers down :(

Little bit of mist this morning, that means all the carrot crunchers here will have front and rear fog lights on for the next week  >:(

I hope to escape back to sanity by the weekend.

On the upside, I was given an Amazon Fire today :D

Thanks to Serek for supplying parts to help keep the Silver Bullet going for a bit longer, and thanks to joshwyatt for providing transport to relocate the subframe from Serek's garage to chrisgixer's place, ready for a quick tidy up, then fit, hopefully this side of xmas.

The spirit of OOF lives :y

General Car Chat / Replacing CV Boot on Zafira
« on: 27 November 2016, 15:48:08 »
Outboard boot split on Zaffy, anyone know the steps to follow to replace it, and if it needs and special tools?

Got a broken front spring as well, is that a simple case of following same steps as an Omega?

When is this dross over?

Sick of the telly being non-stop 'dangle berries', and people rattling tins in front of me - The 'tards fail to understand it offends me, but easily get offended when I tell them what they can do with their tins  >:(

Usual junk mail arrived today, proudly claiming that I could get insurance through them for as little as 195.

I took that to mean nobody ever gets it for 195....
...esp as my cars are FC with protected NCD, business use, 20k pa (10k on battlebus), declared mods etc.

Seeing as 2 of mine are cheaper than that anyway, and the 3rd is only a bit more, it doesn't sound like the once-in-a-lifetime bargain the letter made out.

General Discussion Area / XP user please read (and old Android/etc)
« on: 05 November 2016, 10:05:19 »
Due to some security updates, users of old OS/browser combinations will shortly no longer be able to access OOF easily.

This is likely to impact Windows XP, Symbian and old Android users the most:

XP with IE or Safari won't work. Later FF should work, but is unsupported by MS or FF
Android before Honeycomb/ICS won't work, including Gingerbread
iOS 3 or earlier won't work
All Symbian browsers will not work

Realistically, any desktop OS that's 10yrs old or mobile OS that's 5yrs old are going to be problematic.  All of these are unsupported by their manufacturers, so will not get a fix. Your options may include an OS upgrade, or a new device.

Post up if this might impact you, so we can ascertain the size of the problem.

With non vented disks, calipers, flexi brake hoses, disc shields, handbrake mechanism in drum, track rods etc.  If the diff is from a 3.0l, so much the better. And handbrake cable if its good.

Can collect if a) will fit in Zafira, b) not too far away

General Car Chat / What pair of cars, if you were a bit richer
« on: 26 October 2016, 18:04:10 »
Any single car is a compromise IMHO, so if you could afford, say, a pair of 20k 2nd hand motors, what would it be?

General Car Chat / catching a bus
« on: 10 October 2016, 18:24:08 »
Had to catch a bus today, not used one in ages.

The bus driver was racing another bus, not ideal when they don't handle that well.

This is on top of being in a coach yesterday that made a mess of a fiat shitbox
