Don't you just love them :y

Should have bought one years ago. :'(
i did once buy one from lidl. draining out the oil via the dipstick tube was ok , it worked a lot quicker when the oil was hot. let a friend use it & never saw it again.

General Discussion Area / Re: Hull
« on: 04 May 2019, 14:05:01 »
Hi folks.

Back on “world trip” 2.0. Had a great drive up through Spain and France. Third UK funeral this year. That was yesterday. Very good friend, only 69.

Anyway we have decided to hide for 36 hours to recharge our batteries before reappearing at family in Yorkshire and then going to  Scotland.

A member on here previously recommended Hull so here we are in the centre. Nice rainy day but won’t hold that against it.
its changed since i sailed out of Hull i was there one sunday  last year during the heatwave & there were lots of kids cooling off in a square that shot spouts of water up in the air. its a good shopping area now . enjoyed a pub meal (carvery) in a pub in posterngate. i new that area sa that was where the original shipping federation was.

General Discussion Area / specsavers
« on: 04 May 2019, 13:11:14 »
wife & i recently had eye tests & purchased specs from specsavers. i opted for every day use a pair of varifocals & polaroid single vision sunglasses, & wife a pair of varifocals. when we went to collect my specs were put the lens in the wrong frames. wifey tried hers on & long distant was ok but reading wise she couldnt see anything on the card that they give to read off. in my case i had to wait a week for the lens swap but the wife was told that varifocals needed to be worn & got used too. she,s had throughout the years dozens of pairs & never had problems. on our return i picked up both pairs but re my wifes she explained to them were no good for reading. they messed about for two hours & finally a guy took them did something but fixed them. apparently it was the shape of the lens & originally the varifocal bit was wrong. but i think that type of establishments are more focused on the sell of spectacles

Would you suggest it's the glow plugs then
there are more knowledgeable guys than me , but i would think so. i learnt never to let the 2.5 td get low on fuel too. i believe there is a range rover workshop manual that covers the 2.5 straight six lump.

Run some diagnostics on the car and it is showing fault code 49 glow device general error.Does this mean one or more of the glow plugs is not working ?
i would get the complete set.  :y

Omega General Help / Re: rear brakes
« on: 11 April 2019, 19:27:53 »
i think it is about 3yrs since i replaced the rear pads so probably require new. regards the handbrake shoes ( which were adjusted last May for the m.o.t ) , they have not been replaced for a few years. i did get lots of receipts of jobs done on the car that go back 11yrs mainly servicing, none for rear brake shoes. contemplating doing them may order a cable too.
thanks for all the input . i have the use of a mates lockup next tuesday so will check them out. just an add on regards brakes. the 2.5 td i had always went through the m.o.t when due no bother. however on it 5th test i presumed the brake pads must need doing, so without an inspection i bought a set. when i took the front wheels off the pads were ok. an 8yr old car with its original pads that had almost no wear at all on them.

By the leak off pipe do you mean the canvas striped pipe running by the injectors along the engine?

I did take the black plug off to expose the six wires on the glow plug relay. Will have another look at that.

Quick google search revealed what the leak off pipes are. Will replace them as a possible easy fix.
the very last is a blank , very hard to see its tucked underneath the scuttle if my memory serves me right. another tip is put a rag or something between the starter motor & the engine when doing anything in that region as whatever is dropped usually end up there & lost   :y

i used to purchase a 2mtr length of leak-off pipe from a firm called Pirtek  & cut to size. also range rover stockists were far cheaper than vauxhall & b.m.w used them for gaskets filter etc

General Car Chat / Re: jump starting
« on: 05 April 2019, 01:43:33 »
There was an advisory notice not to apply external power to BMW over a few years but AFAIK that was revoked
i thought that i was doing a lady a good turn. she had been in a hospital car park for a long time leaving lights i presume on as her battery had no life in it . i told her that i would connect some jump leads but when i did everything stopped working.  i probably cost her a packet.

do modern cars such as a new bmw go into a lock down mode if for some reason the battery goes flat & is then attempted to be started with jump leads from a donor battery ??
