Anybody know about Insignias?
« on: 12 June 2012, 12:56:00 »

Just had a rental Insignia delivered and it's got one of those automatic hill start jobbies! It's a manual gearbox and it has no handbrake lever - some clever gubbins it supposed to make hill starts "easier" lol!

Can anybody talk me through the sequence of events to pull away up a hill without rolling back into the car behind?

Moving to general car chat.

It is simple, the handbrake will auto release when the two following conditions are met:

1) The clutch is raised to the biting point
2) The throttle is (lightly) pressed

TBH, on Insignias, that doesn't really work - the bastard bongs at you, and won't release unless you give it some serious beans.

OP
Clutch to just below biting, foot on brake, release, then throttle and clutch. You have 2s from release to get the car on the clutch.

Within that 2s, once you've got the biting point, it will release instantly.  Must be honest, I prefer a proper handbrake, rather than this toy one.

The other thing, in my (limited) experience of insignias, the fekking thing doesn't always come on. A quick flick of the button doesn't always bring it on.

And like all cars with disc brake handbrakes, park it in gear, and if against a kerb, turn steering into it.

Don't they just hold after your foot is taken from the brake? I thought that's the way hill start assist works?

Thats HSA which is part of the ABS system

Sounds more like "Saving £3.75 per car by ditching the handbrake lever" to me. ::)

Can't see it being a cost saving, as I assume the law dictates it still has to be a seperate system form main braking system, thus must have some hefty motors.

True, but the motor(s) can be assembled onto the rear subframe and then there's just an electrical connector to plug in when it gets bolted onto the shell as opposed to having to thread a cable up into the cabin, fit the handbrake lever, connect cable to the lever, adjust it, etc..

I think they would have stayed with a manual handbrake if it wasn't cheaper. Can't see any other advantage other than as a gimmick. Maybe I'm underestimating the importance of gimmicks when selling cars to muppets who can't do a hill start? ;)

Motors are not that hefty to be honest, there a worm drive type system that pulls the brake cable on.

Obviously from an assembly perspective there easier as its a case of mount the motor and plug it in, no adjustment or anything required.

Cant say I have experienced the boot it approach required for release
