Sooooo Simple.....but.....
« on: 23 November 2012, 13:32:03 »

Yes, sooooooo simple but soooooo vital!

What am I on about well....

As some may know I had a bit of a saga with  my miggy;

A full service.....led to a faulty spark plug lead.......led to the replacement of the DIS pack............led to the replace of one of the middle exhaust boxes..........that led to the MOT and PASSING, but a rough engine idle being noted as I already knew; couldn't get rid of it, but knew it was an air leak around the plenum/ breathers area.

Replaced four 'O' rings, but still the air leak that made the car idle like a bad tractor, with everything running erratically, the exhaust system rattling like crazy, and the transmission when in auto 'D' trying one second to move the car forward, then not, then again!  At normal speed though the engine ran beautifully.

So what was laying my super beast low, what major part/parts did I need now, after thinking still DIS pack and all the big stuff that could affect the idling? .....................it was this...............:

Yes, an special 'O' ring, but just an 'O' ring no less, part 90467543, that sits under the breather boxes on top of the plenum to seal the air outlet between the two! ::) ::)

So something so simple caused real headaches, constant investigation with bits repeatedly removed and replaced, and much frustration generated, with me believing at one stage it would never pass the MOT.  A simple part, that I must  have lost when cleaning the breathers, that frankly I had never noticed before on any of my miggies.  But it brought my beast to its knees.

It has taught me yet again with car mechanics it is often the simplest of things that cause problems! :P :P

A little sod of a thing ... always seems to break on removal .. or used to .. I now put a tiny smear of grease around the hole on fitting, for some reason it seems to stop the thing welding itself to the metal .. :)

Known as the saddle seal in the V6 plant - and was fitted using vaseline, best to change the two O rings on the front of the plastic adaptor that go into the throttle body

I have two there, and two in the "extension" plastic breather unit, which, would you believe, is not clear on the official parts computer.  There is no record, according to what I saw on screen with the Vx parts man, of the two further 'O' rings, but they show the two plastic units joining together! They still supply FIVE in the pack though!  ::) ::)  :D :D ;)

the original V6 manifold used to end there at the end of the breather - they then built what they called the droop snoot and made the extension to the breather - not sure why they supply 5 O rings - but they are a bit fragile

The stupid thing is Cem that I did not listen to my inner self and the car mechanics 'training' I received in my teens;  ALWAYS check the simple things first before considering major part failure.  Something I have tried to express when giving advice to others on the OOF and elsewhere, but forgot this time.

In the old days it was a case of first checking spark plug gaps, the points, the condenser, carburettor function, spark plug leads, petrol pump filter, etc, etc.  The trouble is with modern cars is they seem so technical, with sensors and "what the computer says"! ::) ::)  Actually they still run on simple basic functions, that can falter or fail with the old things like air leaks and damaged / missing gaskets / 'O' rings / seals! :P
