William Hague - liability
« on: 10 January 2013, 21:02:49 »

He is now hinting that the UK could start arming the Libyan rebels.

http://playpolitical.typepad.com/uk_conservative/2013/01/william-hague-says-that-the-uk-could-start-arming-syrian-rebels.html

WTF? :o :o

Let's stay well clear of all this. And how do we know that the rebels will treat people any better than Assad? I've heard all sorts of gruesome things about the rebels.

Does he just fancy himself on the world stage?

Hague's as bad as Cameron.  >:( >:( >:(

The real issue is which rebels to arm, not if to arm.

There are 2 distinct groupings:

- 1.  The more common rebel, fighting for freedom from the regime, unorganised, untrained, very passionate.

- 2.  And these guys http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al-Nusra_Front

Trust me, out of all 3 players you want No 1 to win.  There may only be 3 poo sandwiches on offer but you have to eat one.....

No, we should arm NONE of them.

I have suspicions that the rebels are no better - and possibly worse - than the the Assad administration which, for all the alleged ills propounded by the media, is clearly supported by many Syrians. I say let the Syrians sort it out. Our track record for helping insurgents in the Arab Spring is far from exemplary. How many minority Christians have been persecuted (and worse) by these ever-so-nice liberal rebels.

Wake up and smell the coffee.  ;)

oh, I looooove coffee  :D :D

The question is who do you want to win?  Assad?  The extremist islamists who make the wahabis look normal or the rebels?

All have commited crimes but who do you want to govern after the conflict is over?  You have to choose one.  If you do nothing then don't cry when the extremists gain power.

Like I said, it's a big poo sandwich :-\

Pardon my cynicism, Guffer, but (if reports over the last few years are true) we've had difficulty getting the right equipment to Tommy in Afghanistan, yet we can easily find the resources to equip some unknown teen rebels in their Toyota pick-ups in Syria. ::)

Maybe I'm just getting too old to understand. :-\

Any military or general aid moves towards supporting the "rebels", or more like opposition, MUST be undertaken by the UN only.

I agree Nick, there is no way the UK should become directly involved.

Any action even by the UN must also have the support of Russia and China, or the West risks retaliation of one kind or another.  The worst result of that I do not want to think about!! :o :o :o

No Middle Eastern country is worth the risk. Let fellow Arabs deal with it! ;) ;)

With a bit of luck, they will wipe out each other without too much collateral damage to us  ;)
