Why couldn't he either turn off the ignition or knock it out of gear ...

Saw a programme last year on a similar incident with one of the U.S car manufacturers. Braking had little effect, the driver was unable to get out of 'Drive', and turning the key off made no difference other than locking the steering.   :o

That's why I like to still be driving a car where the key mechanically disconnects power from the ignition and the gear selector mechanically operates the valve body in the gearbox, instead of it all being controlled by software. Oh, did I mention that I write software for a living?  ::)

Seem to remember a guy wiped out his family when his Lexus cruise control jammed at 90mph (not in UK). One of our cars doesn't have a key, just a push button, so I can't turn the key off as it's in my pocket. I'd like to think that I could select a low enough (steptronic) gear to ensure that the transmission never worked again, but this may not be the case.  :-\
