The belts and head skimming make up most of the cost.

What makes you think the head gaskets have failed?

My auxillary belt went, so thought it was tensioner, took air intake pipes off and they were full of water. Also where you top the oil up was full of gunk.

Gunk in oil filler neck is normal on the v6 this time of year. What size engine ? Head gasket failure is uncommon on these engines, and other problems are very often misdiagnosed as head gasket.
Whereabouts are you ?

Aux Belt? - Nothing to do with head gasket. Assume it just snapped, not because of a seized water pump?

Air Intake - Driven through flood water? A failed HG would not cause water to go here

"Mayo" on the underneath of oil cap, is totally normal. Especially when using oils such as Castrol, or doing short runs. Blocked breathers also cause this.

None of this is sounding head gasket to me  :y

I am in corby, northants. I noticed no oil in the water though, but garage said its the heads. I never had any sign of head gasket problems as my temp was ok and no white smoke. But he said it is. I thought it was strange with no oil in the header tank.
